Excellent post and follow up, Ben and Scott. Loving what you write is important. I studied all kinds of literature as I earned my MA, and, sure, I'd LOVE to write something as brilliant as, say, Gatsby or something. I definitely have that constant voice in my head pushing me to write something Very Important. But then I remember what led me to become an English major in the first place. It's because as a kid, I loved to read. And I loved to read because I loved stories. I'd be happy if I wrote A Powerful Work of Literature. But I'd be just as happy, maybe even more so, if I wrote Harry Potter. (And that's not even because I'd be ridiculously wealthy, though that's a decent perk. It's that read-in-one-day-because-you-just-can't-stop energy, the pure love of the world, and the joy of the story.) Same with movies. I can appreciate the Great Films. And if I could make a film as powerful as those critically acclaimed masterpieces, I would be psyched. But I'd also be so proud if I made National Treasure or Die Hard or Top Gun or The Rock. Pure entertainment from start to finish, movies I can watch and enjoy over and over. As I write, I always work to hopefully bring the two (Saying Something and Entertaining) together. I'd probably love Ben's shrinking brothers story, ha ha.
