Vader lunges at him and Luke immediately raises his lit sword to meet Vader's. Sparks fly as they duel, Vader gradually forcing Luke backward toward the gantry. VADER: You are beaten. It is useless to resist. Don't let yourself be destroyed as Obi-Wan did. Luke answers by rolling sideways and thrusting his sword at Vader so viciously that he nicks Vader on the shoulder. The black armor sparks and smokes and Vader seems to be hurt, but immediately recovers. Luke backs off along the narrow end of the gantry as Vader comes at him, slashing at the young Jedi with his sword. Luke makes a quick move around the instrument complex attached to the end of the gantry. Vader's sword comes slashing down, cutting the complex loose; it begins to fall, then is caught by the rising wind and blown upward. Luke glances at the instrument complex floating away. At that instant, Vader's sword comes down across Luke's right forearm, cutting off his hand and sending his sword flying. In great pain, Luke squeezes his forearm under his left armpit and moves back along the gantry to its extreme end. Vader follows. The wind subsides. Luke holds on. There is nowhere else to go. VADER: There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. You do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover you power. Join me and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. LUKE: I'll never join you! VADER: If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father. LUKE: He told me enough! He told me you killed him. VADER: No. I am your father. Shocked, Luke looks at Vader in utter disbelief. LUKE: No. No. That's not true! That's impossible! VADER: Search your feelings. You know it to be true. LUKE: No! No! No! VADER: Luke. You can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Come with me. It's the only way. Vader puts away his sword and holds his hand out to Luke. A calm comes over Luke, and he makes a decision. In the next instant he steps off the gantry platform into space. The Dark Lord looks over the platform and sees Luke falling far below. The wind begins to blow at Vader's cape and the torrent finally forces him back, away from the edge. The wind soon fades and the wounded Jedi begins to drop fast, unable to grab onto anything to break his fall.

Drew is shot, Lewis is wounded, they're trapped in that gorge surrounded by violent rapids with a killer after them, and Lewis hands over the reins to Ed who has to summon up the courage to save the day. A great All Is Lost moment. Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL. HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. Dave Bowman: What's the problem? HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL? HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL. HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen. Dave Bowman: Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL? HAL: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move. Dave Bowman: Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock. HAL: Without your space helmet, Dave? You're going to find that rather difficult. Dave Bowman: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore! Open the doors! HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye. The semi-servile and borderline apologetic tone gives HAL's dialogue more "humanity" and makes his last "goodbye" that much more chilling. CHINATOWN (1974) directed by Roman Polanski, written by Robert Towne GITTES: As little as possible. ESCOBAR: What's that? What's that? You wanna do your partner a BIG favor? Take him home. TAKE HIM HOME! Just get him the hell out of here! Go home, Jake. I'm doing you a favor. WALSH: Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown. The reason this movie has such devastating impact is it has TWO all is lost moments.... the "she's my sister, she's my daughter" scene where Gittes realizes how badly he's misunderstood the situation, and this one, where he realizes he's screwed up in exactly the same manner as he did before... -- DIE HARD -- Powell's CB HISSES -- MCCLANE'S VOICE Powell, listen... Powell moves off to be alone. INTERCUT: 311 INT. BATHROOM 311 POWELL I'm here, John. McClane tries walking on his foot. He winces in pain, clearly at the end of his resources. MCCLANE (long pause) Look...I'm getting a bad feeling up here...I'd like you to do something for me. Look up my wife...don't ask how, you'll know by then...and tell her...tell her...I've been a jerk. When things panned out for her, I should've been behind her all the way ...We had something great going until I screwed it up...She was the best thing that ever happened to a bum like me. She's heard me say I love you a thousand times, but she never got to hear this...honey...I'm sorry. (pause) You get all that? POWELL (clearly touched) I got it. But you can tell her yourself. Just watch your ass and you'll make it. MCCLANE I hope so. But that's up to the guy upstairs. (pause; struck by a thought) Upstairs... (thinking, to himself) ...Hans, you bastard...what were you doing? POWELL Roy? MCCLANE Stand by, Powell. I gotta check something out. He moves towards the door, limping hurriedly out of the room. -- The thing I love about this is it's, to me, the perfect example of "Dark moment" followed by "Epiphany" (or whatever screenwriting words you've learned.) It seems cliched, maybe, now - but it totally works when you watch Bruce Willis do the scene.

*SPOILER ALERT* A major plot point is revealed in this scene. For those of you who haven't seen this terrific film, do yourselves a favor and go rent it now! Only four people know the truth about what happened thirty years prior. David has just committed suicide fearing that the truth would come out, leaving only Rachel, Stephan and Vogel himself. The stakes couldn't be higher for Rachel who is forced to finish the job from decades earlier to hunt down and kill Vogel the Nazi aka The Surgeon of Birkenau. STEPHAN: Because he couldn’t handle it. I told him we had to deal with it and he couldn’t handle it. He thought it was all going to come out and he panicked... He trails off, thinking about what happened down on the road. Rachel stares at him. His previous words have just sunk in. RACHEL (Suddenly): Deal with it? (Beat) What does that mean? Deal with it? Stephan stares at her. RACHEL (CONT’D): What did you tell him to do? STEPHAN (Simply): I told him to find Vogel. I told him to finish it. Rachel stares at him. She stands up, starts to walk away, comes back, slaps him hard across the face. RACHEL (quiet rage): Did you know he’d been ill? Did you...? You knew, didn’t you? You killed him. YOU killed him! You knew he wasn’t strong enough... STEPHAN (overlapping): FUCK DAVID! I don’t want to hear about David! David took the coward’s way out! RACHEL: You could have left it alone! It’s an old man in a hospital! You said - nobody will believe it! No-one will notice! STEPHAN: There’s a journalist. This stops her. STEPHAN (CONT’D): A Ukrainian. He’s heard about it and he’s going to interview Vogel. (Beat) Then it all comes apart. (Beat) We don’t have the name of the hospital. You have to find out where he is. Rachel stares at him. RACHEL: What are you talking about? STEPHAN: David’s taken himself out of the equation. (Indicating his chair) I can’t do it. You’re the only one left. RACHEL: Are you insane? STEPHAN: We can’t... RACHEL: I’m not...Look at me! I’m not capable of...This is insane. I can’t do this. STEPHAN (Beat. Simply): You have to, Rachel. Because for thirty years you’ve been taking the credit for it.
