Great observations, thanks. Another instance of the "glass half empty? half full?" aspect of relevance is the dreaded occurrence known as parallel development. For instance, say you're all stoked about your movie in which a mummy wakes up and goes to high school, and then you read in Variety that MGM has a movie about a mummy waking up and going to college (BMOC: Big Mummy on Campus). It happens more than you'd think but you can either be discouraged by it (crumple up the script and curl into a ball) or encouraged (you're thinking along marketable lines, and your next idea will hit)--and I think Scott has talked about this. But this is to say your concept of relevance pops up all over the place, even in movie development.
