I LOVE the story about his daughter "fixing" the joke. It's a great example of: - how notes fail, - how poor most people are as diagnosticians, - how there can be truth behind a bad note, - how complex comedy is, - the danger in "fixing" or "improving" something you don't fully understand, and - why a deep understanding of the mechanics of comedy and of writing in general can help a writer avoid the pitfalls and find the hidden treasures of bad notes.
