I spend a lot of time writing scenes with them in, most of which I won't use in the screenplay. I might 'cast' actors to help me get a sense of the characters, and I've started using character questionnaires, making sure I ask questions that lead to little stories about the character rather than just facts (eg, what's the worst thing that happened to as a child, or where would you take someone on a first date).
