Of course Forrest Gump sounds ridiculous when you just describe all the historical events he encounters. It's Jenny and, more importantly, Lt. Dan that makes it all work. It's their liberal counterpoint to Gump's naive idealism that drives the movie. Oh, and humor. Gump is a comedy that plays off the nostalgia of the audience.
