Oh also... Spielberg has made a few sci-fi movies, though they're rarely classified as such. Ie ET (childhood favorite, though I think I put it in the fantasy must sees). Jurassic Park is adventure but it's also sci-fi and I'd put it in as a must-see. Minority report, AI, Close encounters should get mentions for being iconic. And Apollo 13 (even though it's not actually sci-fi it still has the same genre elements).

oooh...I love this category.. There are so many good sci-fi films, it's hard to take it down to 10. However I've put astricks next to 10 films (well, 11, but Trip to the Moon is only 15 minutes long, so technically it's more like .2 of an astrick)..anywhoo, 10 films that use the science to really ask the deep questions of who we are, what can we do and what *should* we do. And most of them are entertaining to boot...most of them...I'm looking at you 2001, but it's still worth seeing. Lessee...in no particular order and with cross-pollinating genres no less... There isn't enough space here to debate whether science fiction is a genre or a setting (truth is, it's both..) and as a genre it has a LOT of sub-genres that leech out of it, from utopian/dystopian futures to post-apocalypse scenarios to alternate history to alien invasion to space opera and so on, and then there are the ‘aesthetics’ cyberpunk, steampunk.. science fiction is a huge, rich vein to tap, and while the quality varies enormously, sometimes the underlying “what if..?” questions being asked are still interesting. Anyway, here's an easy selection of films: - Ever Since The World Ended - Monsters - It Happened Here - Contact - CSI: Confederate States of America - Code 46 - The Age of Stupid - Attack The Block - The Handmaid’s Tale - White Man’s Burden - The Time Traveller’s Wife - Never Let Me Go There’s also a huge amount of science fiction on TV, and the appetite for it never seems to dwindle even though stuff gets cancelled all the time. Every season, every network has at least one new SF-based show: - Battlestar Galactica - Fringe - Alcatraz - Babylon 5 - Firefly - Heroes - X-Files - Lost - Revolution - The Neighbors Also, it’s worth pointing out that - without exception - anything that was adapted from a book, the book is better. Usually films are either toned-down for the audience or too expensive to do properly.
