Privacy all the way! Except during the brainstorming phase. I love throwing ideas off friend. It's almost like I have to think up something great for the sole purpose of impressing them.

I've trained myself to write anywhere. But in my office, with music blasting is the best.

@Raiyenne: Either. Public space usu in a w8ting a mode, I write out scenes, doesn't matter if it make sense or not then review l8ter.

@ChadDarnell: I just need air conditioning. Otherwise I could write in a tomb.

Privacy is better, but if I have to, I can work in a cafe - or increasingly, on a train (living here, any script or pitch meeting involves a train journey of several hours, so I'm learning to make use of it...)

@cinemasugar: Oddly in public places I tend to withdraw from my surroundings into my own personal bubble and focus on my task more easily.

I write best when I'm supposed be doing something else. Usually driving, unfortunately. Or sitting in a meeting. Or yard work. Or my personal favorite - "trying to get to bed because I have to get up early." Nothing seems to fuel my inspiration like inconvenience.

The last couple years it's been better at either the local brew-pub that has high-back booths for simulated privacy or the bagel place at a 4-top table. It's just too hard to get into the zone at home without my own office. Oddly, it's easier to tune out strangers than family.

I almost exclusively write on the bus these days. I have two and a half hours of bus travel each weekday, to and from my editing job, so that's perfect time to be writing. In go the headphones, away goes the world and writing is quite easy to pull off. Something about the hum of the engine is helpful too. Having that sense of forward momentum translates to the page.

My dream is to write in a guest house or a pool room but since I don't have one and don't know anyone who does, I just write in the bedroom. The more isolated the better. I usually wear headphones to drown out other people in the apartment. Also, night time works for me because the energy of other people is in it's minimum.

I don't know that I have a huge preference. By default I mostly write at home, but that's just because it's easier. I don't think privacy's an issue for me, nor do I struggle with distractions at home. If anything, I find the people who come with writing publicly to be more distracting. So like I said, I think it's a draw for me.

If you like to write in public places, it may be prudent to confirm that you're not on an unencrypted wifi network, because of a change in the laws around packet sniffing and (expectation of) privacy. Does all of that sound like geeky gibberish? Just trust me: make sure your network is encrypted. Or, better yet, read the article.
