I don't have a writing group (or a group of friends who are writers) and it is reassuring to know that there are many ways of reaching written nirvana. I wrote my first three screenplays the "organic way" - letting the characters take me where they led me. My current project I am crafting using the "Save the Cat" structure. I find the TASK of writing more comfortable with the structure, but mostly because it pushes the creation of the story into the planning process rather than the writing process. An experiment it is.

Experimentation is such a wise move. Way to go, Shawn. There may not be "one right way" but there are often better ways than what any of us are using at a given moment. And, we tend to be poor judges of our own efficiency (such as all the people who claim to be fantastic multitaskers when study after study contradicts their anecdata). I really applaud your willingness to experiment, Shawn, because most people don't have the courage or drive to shake up their writing processes. Very best of luck with your current project.
