okay, yesterday I railed against specialty films, and today I'll shout out in support. Because... People who were alive in the 70s, when film was at it's most potent artistic peak, still think film is an important medium and respect it as an artform. It is the high art of their generation, just as novels were the high art of the previous generations. Today's youth do not think film is as important as what is happening online, or perhaps even videogames and comic books, which is the high art of the new generation. Film is one person (an elite group of people really) voicing their opinion on a worldwide soapbox. The internet is the whole world voicing their opinion on a worldwide soapbox. Where the previous generation saw film's potential and considered it important, that's not the case anymore. Today, important things happen online, and it will continue to be more and more important. When a guy can basically sit in his garage and make a hateful, racist home movie that causes people to die on the other side of the world, the Hollywood studio business is no longer a potent force in the world. Hollywood films are carefully designed to not provoke that kind of reaction, and that's why they're regarded as nothing entertainments. But the older generation still thinks film is important, just like there are people that think Broadway is still the best theatre has to offer.

Yeah...but eventually even these pre teens and teens and college students become those in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. And when done right...even at a cheap level...a good movie connects. To put all their dollars and eggs in one basket mimicking THE AVENGERS, is once again...Hollywood digging their own graves and then ignoring the fact they're falling into it. and the audience? We don't care. Someone'll come along outside of the Hollywood system...and make a movie people like and talk about...MARIGOLD HOTEL anyone?
