I've always thought about stories and inciting incidents in terms of the external plot ("why is this taking place now") but not in terms of the internal arc ("why does this character NEED this to happen now"). Wow. It makes stories look really different, doesn't it? I'm going to spend some time running some premises through this and see what it turns up. Thank you very much!
