I am absolutely, completely in. I'm going to finish my Quest idea by Christmas. Though the five-hour time difference from the UK might screw around with my participation on message boards, etc, I will be there eventually...

Count me in. Coming to the end of my first spec feature, hungry to write another already. Plus I optioned feature rights to an unpublished graphic novel script and need to crack on with my adaptation, so this'll be good practice for that.

Liz and Debbie, at different points in the year I'm anywhere between GMT -5 and -8, but I have killer insomnia, so the odds of us all being online at the same time are pretty good! I'll look forward to chatting with both of you in the forum.
Scott at 2012-08-03 00:16:33:
Between people who have emailed me, tweeted and this, I'd say we already have commitments from 40 people. That number will likely go up. So definitely want to create a good message board environment to facilitate your creative processes. Re those of you who are internationally based: The message boards will be entirely asynchronous, so there is no set time you have to do anything together. You read and post on your own schedule. More on all this in a week or two when we launch the GOYOQ message boards. For those of you who are committing to this, you can spend the next 5 weeks [before Prep] not only engaging in the conversation about screenwriting theory as we have been doing with Plot, Concept and Character, do some research. Watch movies that are similar to the one you're writing. Same thing with scripts. And if your story requires some really specific knowledge about a subculture, science, history, etc, now is the time to get that research done.

David Komer at 2012-08-03 02:47:17:
Definitely willing to give it a shot and take it from there. Making it easier to use via a focused section is a *great* help. Thanks for doing that! Question- I have two different concepts that I want to develop. Honestly, I don't yet know which one I like more, nor which one will make the better movie. I (think I) know the very beginning and end of each- but I have no idea how the giant middle will pan out yet. What's your advice for this situation, esp. regarding this unique GOYOQ opportunity... should I just pick one and go with it, or try to juggle both? In case it's a factor- my time is very, very limited. I have a dayjob, family, and other obligations all competing for my time. GOYOQ is basically going to be a nighttime/early-morning/partial-weekend thing for me when I can (and I desperately want to!), so I really need to make sure I'm maximizing the time I do put into it. Your advice is greatly appreciated!
David Komer at 2012-08-03 02:49:42:
BTW- just to clarify my question, my concern is that if I juggle both, I might discover that the other one is really the better story... if I only pick one, I lose that advantage, but I gain more focus.

Meg T at 2012-08-03 10:14:02:
David--My advice would be to pick one. I'm having similar issues and time constraints so one focus is usually the best approach. Otherwise, you end up with diluted effort to two projects and risk not finishing either. That's just me. I don't yet have an idea for the Quest, but we have plenty of prep time to test a couple out. So if I were you, toy with both ideas during the Core phase. By the time it's ready for Prep, you will likely have an idea that speaks to you more and then focus on that one. there's always the possibility that while gearing up for Prep, a new, better idea may take hold. But, for me at least, I need to only have one during Prep & Pages if I want to actually finish one.
David Komer at 2012-08-03 10:18:52:
Thanks Meg, that's really sound advice... to toy with both during the core phase (and be open to something new), but commit to just one when we really get started in prep. Can anyone offer some pointers on how I should toy with them to see how they hold? What I'm thinking right now is to try outlining them and see what happens. But maybe there are more efficient methods... like certain questions to ask of them that can reveal what's lurking underneath...

David, I also have 2 different concepts, one I have had for some time , and have a lot of the story in my head. The "Quest" made me put more down on paper. I wrote a synopsis for both ideas, and the one that was the most complete and flowed well was the one I went with. The synopsis is also very helpful with writing a detailed outline.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm having an extra crazy summer this year, and as a result I missed out on participating in some of the earlier Go On Your Own Quest discussions. I'm planning on going back through them (they are all available here), starting with the first post of week one. For those of us following on from home, the discussions in the posts are the next best thing to a workshop atmosphere (especially until the forum goes live). I'd love to get to learn from all of you, and I hope you'll consider joining me in revisiting these posts, and discussing Scott's questions in the new posts going forward.
