Wellp, Looks like I didn't make it. Which of course is disappointing, but still I concede to the superiority of the 21 log lines that made the first pass. Thank you, Scott for putting this together, for going through all the loglines, and for going through with the Quest in the first place. The process of the writing the loglines themselves really forced me to think about the concept and how to express it. (I actually think you can have a good concept and write a terrible logline for it.) I'm still planning on writing my script (in fact, I was just beating it out on note cards earlier tonight) and look forward to seeing the progress of all the Questers. Happy writing! -Art

I'm gratified and impressed by your responses. The latter because in taking the "I'm going to use this to get motivated" route, you show the spirit of a screenwriter. Believe me, every single screenwriter in Hollywood has suffered disappointments, often many of them, myself included as I have shared over the years with The Business of Screenwriting. We have to learn to push on, work harder, write better. I think it was Vince Lombardi who said, "We win more from losing than we do from winning." Besides, everyone who entered wins a free Core or Craft course with me. That was kind of my thing, there would only be winners. And I really think this Go On Your Own Quest thing can take off. I'd love to see dozens of you take on the challenge of writing a script during those 16 weeks of the Quest workshop [Prep and Pages]. So take a deep breath, straighten your back, set your jaw, and do what Gil suggests: "Let's get ready to rumble, people!"

As others have said, this is an awesome opportunity. For those who know log lines, and absent any feedback on log lines that were dumped, it would be a good learning experience to see the log lines did make the cut. It lets us learn by comparison. Also, it gives us an insight to your criteria.

The Quest has spured me on to get this story, that has been in my head for 5 years now, on paper. There have been a lot of requests in this regard. Can't do it because I pledged all submissions would remain confidential. Plus as Max Millimeter would say, "Until you get that script written, you protect that idea like a virgin in a whorehouse." What he means is from a purely pragmatic standpoint, any of these 21 writers - and frankly any others - are in an exposed position with any story concept until they write the script and get it copyrighted. Ideas are the lifeblood of Hollywood. Good ones can be worth millions, even billions of dollars. It's fine to talk about ideas with other writers you know and trust, but whenever you intersect with Hollywood, the smart thing to do is have the script written. That said, as I noted elsewhere, I can probably draw some general deductions from having read 3600+ loglines which could be of value to GITS readers. Once the dust settles, I will attempt to do that. But as long as we're here, let me make another plug to everyone reading: Use this Quest opportunity to write your script. The more we write, the better we get. And it only takes one script and the right set of eyeballs in Hollywood to change your life.

I'm feeling much more concise and pragmatic in generating ideas and looking for concepts now and this will be a whole new colective writing effort from which everybody can draw huge amounts of experience. While I am feeling the same disappointment that seems to be going around, I am also feeling excitement at going on my own quest along with everyone else. This community that you have built is such a positive entity that it's impossible to let the hint of "rejection" faze me for but a moment. And I know it's not really "rejection" as there was so much for you to consider, narrowing to the pool does not seem like an easy job in the timeframe you gave yourself.
