Rango (2011) I couldn't find the script. This is from a transcript I found online. Not sure how accurate it is part from the opening line. I really liked the clever dialogue in this film. This first line is notable because of the obvious reference to the expectations of this type of story and the fact that the protagonist spells it out for us. I bet every writer in the audience thought that was extra funny. I also included the following scene (no clip unfortunately) with the armadillo that sends Rango on his quest. http://movieclips.com/RBz6-rango-movie-an-unexpected-event/ Rango: People, I've had an epiphany! The hero cannot exist in a vacuum! What our story needs is an ironic, unexpected event, that will propel the hero into conflict! [just then we see that Rango is a pet kept in a glass aquarium traveling in the back of a car which swerves, the aquarium falls off the car into the middle of the road breaking] - [Rango spots an armadillo lying in the middle of the road] Roadkill: I need a little help here. [the armadillo has a large gap in his body where the car wheel has passed through him] Rango: Uh...are you okay? Roadkill: I must get to the other side. Rango: The other side? You mean that...just now that was you crossing the road? That's why the... [he starts reenacting the car swerving off the road and him falling out of the car] Rango: Why'd you do that? Roadkill: This is my quest. He waits for me. Rango: Wha...who? Roadkill: The Spirit of the West, amigo. The one! They say he rides an alabaster carriage with golden guardians to protect him. Rango: What are...what are you talkin' about? Roadkill: Enlightenment. We are nothing without it. Rango: Nothing?! Your delusional quest just ruined my life! I had an incredibly complex social network going! Highly sophisticated friends! I was very popular! Roadkill: Friends? I don't see no friends. Rango: Well, uh...the... Roadkill: You are a very lonely lizard. Now, uh...help me up. And I will help you find what you seek. Rango: Uh, you...you will? Roadkill: Quickly now, I must get back to my quest. Rango: You mean, you've done this before? Roadkill: Oh, yes! Many times. [Rango walks up on to Roadkills body] Roadkill: That's it. Pull my finger Rango: Uhhh... Roadkill: The Spirit is waiting for me. Rango: Okay. Okay. [Rango grabs hold of Roadkills finger and starts pulling, but he fails to move Roadkill] Rango: Okay! That's not gonna work. [after Rango has failed to move Roadkill] Roadkill: I must get to the other side. Rango: Why don't you just wait until there are no cars coming? Roadkill: It's not so easy as it looks. Rango: The what? Roadkill: It's a metaphor. [just then a massive truck heads towards them] [lying in the middle of the road after being run over by the truck] Roadkill: You need a little help, amigo? Rango: I think the metaphor broke my spleen! Roadkill: The path of loneliness is fraught with consequence. Rango: Yeah, I'm just looking for the path to water. Roadkill: If you want to find water, you must first find dirt. Rango: Uh...dirt. [Roadkill laughs] Roadkill: Destiny, she is kind to you. Tomorrow is Wednesday, the water comes. At noon the towns people gather for a mysterious ritual... Rango: Wow! What uhhh...a town? You mean like with real people and everything? Where? Roadkill: A days journey. Follow your shadow. Rango: You want me to just walk out into the desert? Roadkill: Uhumm. That's the way. Rango: Okay. So you're saying there's a town, a real town? Not a metaphor town? Roadkill: Go on. It's okay. Rango: Okay. Well, then I'm going. I am leaving the road now! [he turns to go] Rango: I am walking into the desert! Alone! [he starts walking slowly towards the desert; Roadkill calls out to him] Roadkill: We all have our journeys to make. [he turns his face away and says quietly] Roadkill: I will see you on the other side.

THE PRODUCERS (1968) written and directed by Mel Brooks Dialogue: Bloom and Bialystock actually take turns being Heralds in this scene. BLOOM (musing to himself) Heh, heh, heh, amazing. It's absolutely amazing. But under the right circumstances, a producer could make more money with a flop than he could with a hit. QUICK CUT TO BIALYSTOCK'S SLEEPING FACE. HIS EYES POP OPEN. CUT BACK TO BLOOM. BLOOM Yes. Yes. It's quite possible. If he were certain the show would fail, a man could make a fortune. CUT TO BIALYSTOCK. BY NOW HE IS HALFWAY ACROSS THE ROOM. HIS WHOLE BEING TINGLING WITH ALERTNESS. HE MOVES TO BLOOM'S DESK AND HOVERS OVER HIM, WAITING EXPECTANTLY FOR MORE INFORMATION. BUT BLOOM IS LOST IN HIS WORK, UNAWARE THAT BIALYSTOCK IS HANGING ON HIS EVERY WORD. BIALYSTOCK Yes??? BLOOM LOOKS UP. HE IS STARTLED TO SEE BIALYSTOCK'S FACE SO CLOSE TO HIS OWN. BLOOM (at a loss) Yes, what? BIALYSTOCK What you were saying. Keep talking. BLOOM What was I saying? BIALYSTOCK You were saying that under the right circumstances, a producer could make more money with a flop than he could with a hit. BLOOM (smiling) Yes, it's quite possible. BIALYSTOCK You keep saying that, but you don't tell me how. How could a producer make more money with a flop than with a hit? 20. BLOOM, SLIGHTLY EXASPERATED, PUTS HIS PENCIL DOWN AND FACES BIALYSTOCK. HE SPEAKS TO BIALYSTOCK AS A TEACHER WOULD A STUDENT. BLOOM It's simply a matter of creative accounting. Let us assume, just for the moment, that you are a dishonest man. BIALYSTOCK Assume away! BLOOM Well, it's very easy. You simply raise more money than you really need. BIALYSTOCK What do you mean? BLOOM You've done it yourself, only you did it on a very small scale. BIALYSTOCK What did I do? BLOOM You raised two thousand more than you needed to produce your last play. BIALYSTOCK So what? What did it get me? I'm wearing a cardboard belt. BLOOM Ahhhhhh! But that's where you made your error. You didn't go all the way. You see, if you were really a bold criminal, you could have raised a million. BIALYSTOCK But the play only cost $60,000 to produce. BLOOM Exactly. And how long did it run? BIALYSTOCK One night. 21. BLOOM See? You could have raised a million dollars, put on a sixty thousand dollar flop and kept the rest. BIALYSTOCK But what if the play was a hit? BLOOM Oh, you'd go to jail. If the play were a hit, you'd have to pay off the backers, and with so many backers there could never be enough profits to go around, get it? BIALYSTOCK Aha, aha, aha, aha, aha, aha!! So, in order for the scheme to work, we'd have to find a sure fire flop. BLOOM What scheme? BIALYSTOCK What scheme? Your scheme, you bloody little genius. BLOOM Oh, no. No. No. I meant no scheme. I merely posed a little, academic accounting theory. It's just a thought. BIALYSTOCK Bloom, worlds are turned on such thoughts! BIALYSTOCK STARTS MOVING IN ON BLOOM. BIALYSTOCK Don't you see, Bloom. Darling, Bloom, glorious Bloom, it's so simple. Step one: We find the worst play in the world -- a sure flop. Step two: I raise a million dollars -- there's a lot of little old ladies in this world. Step three: You go back to work on the books. Phoney lists of backers -- one for the government, one for us. You can do it, Bloom, you're a wizard. (MORE) 22. BIALYSTOCK (CONT'D) Step four: We open on Broadway and before you can say 'step five' we close on Broadway. Step six: We take our million dollars and fly to Rio de Janiero. BIALYSTOCK GRABS BLOOM IN HIS ARMS AND BEGINS TO LEAD HIM IN A WILD TANGO AROUND THE ROOM. BIALYSTOCK (sings) "Ah, Rio, Rio by the seao, meo, myo, meo ... " BLOOM (afraid of the scheme, afraid of the dance, afraid of Bialystock) Mr. Bialystock. No. Wait. Please. You're holding me too tight. I'm an honest man. You don't understand. BIALYSTOCK (leading Bloom as he talks) No, Bloom, you don't understand. This is fate, this is destiny. There's no avoiding it. AT THIS POINT, BIALYSTOCK SWEEPS BLOOM INTO AN ELABORATE DIP. BLOOM (the back of his head practically touching the floor) Mr. Bialystock, not more than five minutes ago, against my better judgment, I doctored your books. That, sir, is the ultimate extent of my criminal life. BIALYSTOCK RAISES HIS FISTS TO THE HEAVENS IN DESPAIR. BLOOM, EXPERIENCING A DEFINITE LACK OF SUPPORT, GOES CRASHING TO THE FLOOR. BIALYSTOCK OOOOOHH! OOOOOHH! OOOOOHH! OOOOOHH! I WANT THAT MONEY! CAMERA ON BLOOM AS HE LIES STRICKEN ON THE FLOOR. 23. BLOOM (to himself) Oh, I fell on my keys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGdY4jfhKRM&feature=related

Oh yeah. Rango is a great example. The whole film seemed like a dedication to mono-myth story structure.

Had a couple ideas for this one (Matrix, LA Confidential) but went with a childhood favorite of mine. Monster Squad, written by Shane Black and Fred Dekker Sean: I think there are monsters, like real ones! I heard my dad talking on the phone to a guy down at the police station tonight. There was a guy down there screaming he was a werewolf, and they shot him! And the body disappeared from the coroner van, the coroner guy was dead! Rudy: So what? He got shot and the werewolf took his body? Sean: No you bean head! He WAS a werewolf! Maybe Rudy: Yeah but if they shot him? Sean: It must've been regular bullets, not silver ones. Look I know this sounds stupid, a mummy disappeared from the museum tonight. Eugene: Mummy came in my house! Sean: Guys, Dracula might be here too. Patrick: Oh man, Fat Kid farted! Horace: Did not! Sean: God damn will you guys SHUT UP? Didn't you hear a word I said? These guys are dead, get a clue! Something's out there and it's killing people! And if it's monsters, nobody's going to do a thing about it except us! Could only find the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VAat7Q--wQ I love how the kids stay kids, unable to focus for too long on even the most serious of conversations. Fun stuff.

My favorite Herald, undoubtedly-- Ferris Bueller! There are so many scenes where Ferris forces Cameron into action, but I love the definitive line at the end of this phone scene: "You're not dying. You just can't think of anything good to do." CAMERON (weak) Hello? FERRIS' VOICE Cameron! What's happening? CAMERON Very little. FERRIS' VOICE How do you feel? CAMERON Shredded. FERRIS' VOICE Is your mother in the room? Cameron takes the thermometer out of his mouth. CAMERON She's not home. Where are you? FERRIS' VOICE Home. 24 INT. FERRIS' FAMILY ROOM. FERRIS 24 Ferris is sprawled out in the chair. FERRIS I'm taking the day off. Get dressed and come over. CAMERON'S VOICE I can't. I'm sick. FERRIS It's all in your head. Come on over. 25 INT. CAMERON'S ROOM 25 Cameron's insistent. CAMERON I feel like complete shit, Ferris. I can't go anywhere. FERRIS' VOICE I'm sorry to hear that. Now, come on over and pick me up. Ferris disconnects. Cameron slowly hangs up the phone. CAMERON I'm dying. The phone rings again. Cameron hits the speaker button. FERRIS' VOICE You're not dying. You just can't think of anything good to do. http://youtu.be/rIqWSPUh2rY The scene in the car where Cameron argues with himself is pretty fantastic, too. :)

(Erik Lehnsherr sneaks out of a CIA base with classified information. Charles is waiting outside to intercept him.) Charles: From what I know about you, I’m surprised you managed to stay this long. Eric: What do you know about me? Charles: Everything. Erik: Then you know to stay out of my head. Charles: I am sorry, Erik, but I've seen what Shaw did to you. I felt your agony. I can help you. Erik: I don't need your help. Charles: Don't kid yourself, you needed my help last night. It's not just me you’re walking away from. Here you have the chance to be part of something much bigger than yourself. I won't stop you leaving. I could, but I won't. [Charles heads back inside] Charles: Shaw's got friends. You could do with some. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), X-Men: First Class. No clip, alas. My question: Charles Xavier is Heralding all right, but is this strictly a Call to Adventure? Erik already has an adventure – Nazi-hunting, to avenge his people and find the man who killed his mother and destroyed his childhood. His motives may be selfish (that is, personal), and the adventure is destroying him rather helping him grow as a person, but structurally it’s still a Hero’s Journey -style adventure. So what’s Charles calling him to? The right adventure, perhaps. The one that will make you, not destroy you. I hadn’t considered before that a character can already be engaged in an adventure, when a call arrives that forces them to make a choice between adventures…

FIGHT CLUB (1999) directed by David Fincher written by Jim Uhls, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk Dialogue take-away: Tyler Durden is one of the great Herald/Mentor/Tricksters of the last couple of decades - a lot of his dialogue takes the form of a subtle or not so subtle call to adventure, usually as lethal as it is freeing. Tyler Durden: Did you know that if you mix equal parts of gasoline and frozen orange juice concentrate you can make napalm? Narrator: No, I did not know that; is that true? Tyler Durden: That's right... One could make all kinds of explosives, using simple household items. Narrator: Really...? Tyler Durden: If one were so inclined. Narrator: Tyler, you are by far the most interesting single-serving friend I've ever met... see I have this thing: everything on a plane is single-serving... Tyler Durden: Oh I get it, it's very clever. Narrator: Thank you. Tyler Durden: How's that working out for you? Narrator: What? Tyler Durden: Being clever. Narrator: Great. Tyler Durden: Keep it up then... Right up. [Gets up from airplane seat] Tyler Durden: Now a question of etiquette; as I pass, do I give you the ass or the crotch...? Tyler Durden: I want you to hit me as hard as you can. ...... Narrator: Well, what do you want me to do? You just want me to hit you? Tyler Durden: C'mon, do me this one favor. Narrator: Why? Tyler Durden: Why? I don't know why; I don't know. Never been in a fight. You? Narrator: No, but that's a good thing. Tyler Durden: No, it is not. How much can you know about yourself, you've never been in a fight? I don't wanna die without any scars. So come on; hit me before I lose my nerve. Narrator: This is crazy. Tyler Durden: So go crazy. Let 'er rip. Narrator: I don't know about this. Tyler Durden: I don't either. Who gives a shit? No one's watching. What do you care? Narrator: Whoa, wait, this is crazy. You want me to hit you? Tyler Durden: That's right. Narrator: What, like in the face? Tyler Durden: Surprise me. Narrator: This is so fucking stupid... [Narrator swings, connects against Tyler's head] Tyler Durden: Motherfucker! You hit me in the ear! Narrator: Well, Jesus, I'm sorry. Tyler Durden: Ow, Christ... why the ear, man? Narrator: Guess I fucked it up... Tyler Durden: No, that was perfect! trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klKekX-VXmA

One of my favs from childhood: The Dark Crystal: Written by David Odell, story by Jim Henson No clips, but the lines are in the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzgVPB5dpgg (Trevor Jones' fantabulous score still fills me with wonder and excitement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSBixqFjddQ&feature=related) urSu: Gelfling, I have told you of the Skeksis... Jen: The Skeksis killed my mother and father... urSu: The story runs deeper than you know... and you are part of it. Jen: I don't understand. urSu: The Skeksis will vow to destroy you. For the prophecy says, you must find the shard... the crystal shard... [image of shard appears out of the reflecting pool] Jen: the crystal shard? urSu: ...To save our world, Gelfling, you must find the shard... before the three suns meet... If not, Skeksis rule forever. Jen: Where is it? urSu: Aughra holds the shard. Follow the greater sun for a day to the home of Aughra. There, she knows all the secrets. [gnarled image appears out of the reflecting pool] Jen: Aughra...Follow the greater sun... But master, I'm only a Gelfling. urSu: I should have told you these things long ago, now it is up to you. Remember me Jen... We may meet in another life... but, not again in this one.
