The first sentence in #10 is obviously wise. The second makes me want to hang a dreamcatcher over my bed the minute I'm gone getting my aura cleansed. #11: Yes. Obviously. #12: Slightly ironic, given how unsurprising this advice is. #13: Absolutely. Also true, at least for me, about depressed characters. This one hits home because I often forget to give all my characters axes to grind.

I think #12 hits me most. I have a tendency to go with the first or second impulse and only much later maybe give in to a third. I'm trying not to, but old habits die hard.

It's amazing how many times I broke #13 when I first started writing scripts. For my own purposes I'd rephrase it as "Make sure the character has something she cares about". That can work even if what she cares about is "having a quiet life", provided that's the point on which the story challenges her.
