Well, I'll start us off with the obvious one, from The Avengers... Steve Rogers: Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you? Tony Stark: Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. No actual clip yet, but the exchange is in this version of the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hPpG4s3-O4
Debbie Moon at 2012-06-16 18:32:34:
Incidentally, what's brilliant about this exchange is that Stark actually answers Rogers' question (in a way) later in the movie. In Act Three, finding Loki has taken over Stark Tower, Tony walks in to confront him - having taken off his malfunctioning, ruined Iron Man suit. Even without his normal tactical advantage, he's ballsy and smart enough to outwit Loki, thus proving that he's more than just his invention, he can be a hero without it...

Another obvious one. From Star Wars Han Solo: Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells me you're lookin' for passage to the Alderaan system? Obi-Wan: Yes indeed, if it's a fast ship. Han Solo: Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? Obi-Wan: Should I have? Han Solo: It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I've outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now. She's fast enough for you old man. What's the cargo? Obi-Wan: Only passengers. Myself, the boy, two droids... and no questions asked. Han Solo: [chuckles] What is it? Some kind of local trouble? Obi-Wan: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any Imperial entanglements. http://youtu.be/35cLo7d07Xs?t=3m

From The Social Network by Aaron Sorkin (transcripted quote from IMDb) Gage: Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention? Mark Zuckerberg: [stares out the window] No. Gage: Do you think I deserve it? Mark Zuckerberg: [looks at Gage] What? Gage: Do you think I deserve your full attention? Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don't want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no. Gage: Okay - no. You don't think I deserve your attention. Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try - but there's no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing. [pauses] Mark Zuckerberg: Did I adequately answer your condescending question?

Yojimbo (1961) http://movieclips.com/f7UE-yojimbo-movie-get-two-coffins-ready/ Henchman #1: The two-bit samurai again? Henchman #2: What do you want this time? The Samurai: You guys have such cute faces. Henchman #3: What? The Samurai: You talk tough but couldn't hurt a fly. Adorable. Henchman #1: Don't take us for fools. See this tattoo? I wasn't in prison for nothing! Henchman #2: I'm a wanted fugitive. They'll crucify me if I'm caught. Henchman #3: Same here. They'll stick my head on a pike. Not to brag, but I've committed every crime in the book. The Samurai: So you won't mind if I kill you? Henchman #3: What? Henchman #2: Kill us if you can! The Samurai: It'll hurt. Henchman #1: We're gamblers. We ain't afraid of the sword. The Samurai: There's no cure for fools. Casket maker. Two coffins. No, better make that three. - Isn't it always the ones that brag the most before a fight that get beaten the worst? The hero doesn't need to brag. He just tells it like it is and can back it up with his actions. This would have qualified for this week's theme as well since it was remade as A Fistful of Dollars in 1964. Note how the coffins joke is handled in the Leone version: http://movieclips.com/VNMnZ-a-fistful-of-dollars-movie-apologize-to-my-mule/ Our hero tells the casket maker to get the coffins ready before the fight. Talk about confidence!

"Johnny Guitar" (1954) Vienna: You and McIvers own the whole town and every head of beef within five hundred miles. But that isn't enough, is it? You've got to own everything. You can't stand to see anyone else live. Well, you're going to. You're going to see a whole new town right where you're standing. A town you don't own. The railroad's sending in people by tens, twenties, hundreds, and thousands! You can't keep them all out! Tell them, Mr. Andrews! Mr. Andrews: I think you put it rather well. John McIvers: You're not buildin' no depot here. Mr. Andrews: That's for Vienna to decide. Vienna: Vienna decided! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl6pc5de51w (clip starts at 2:38)

This one is a suck up brag. From Die Hard. ALL TURN at a rap on the door. Ellis is there. ELLIS Hope I'm not interrupting...? HANS (to Fritz) What does he want? As Fritz shrugs: ELLIS It's not what I want, it's what I can give you. Look, let's be straight, okay? It's obvious you're not some dumb thug up here to snatch a few purses, am I right? Karl looks at Ellis and then at Hans, as if to say, let me plug this asshole right now. But Hans is either amused of curious or bored enough to shake his head, turn back to Ellis. HANS (politely) You're very perceptive. ELLIS (flattered) Hey, I read the papers, I watch 60 minutes, I say to myself, these guys are professionals, they're motivated, they're happening. They want something. Now, personally, I don't care about your politics. Maybe you're pissed at the Camel Jockeys, maybe it's the Hebes, Northern Ireland, that's none of my business. I figure, You're here to negotiate, am I right? HANS You're amazing. You figured this all out already? ELLIS Hey, business is business. You use a gun, I use a fountain pen, what's the difference? To put it in my terms, you're here on a hostile takeover and you grab us for some greenmail but you didn't expect a poison pill was gonna be running around the building. (smiling) Hans, baby...I'm your white knight. HANS (dryly) I must have missed 60 Minutes. What are you saying? ELLIS The guy upstairs who's fucking things up? I can give him to you. As Hans reacts with real interest for the first time, we: CUT TO: 231 POWELL 231 By the CB. He suddenly REACTS to a GROAN from McClane. POWELL Roy! You all right? 232 INSIDE - MCCLANE 232 He's by an open desk drawer, having just ripped open a package of twinkies he's found. He grimaces, mouth full. MCCLANE Yeah, just trying to handle some year old twinkies. Yucck. What do they put in these things? POWELL (reciting) 'Sugar, enriched flour, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, polysorbate 60 and yellow dye #5.' MCCLANE (laughing) You sound like a man with a couple of kids. POWELL Not yet, the wife in working on our first. You got any kids back on the ranch? McClane swallows Twinkie with a grimace, takes out his wallet, flips it open to a picture of himself and Holly and the kids in happier days. MCCLANE Two. And I'd sure like to see them swinging on the jungle gym with Al junior. POWELL It's a date. You buy the ice cream. McClane laughs, stares at the photo, when suddenly another VOICE besides Powell's comes over his radio. HANS' VOICE (o.s., on CB) Touching, cowboy, touching. (pause) Or should I call you Mister McClane? Mister officer John McClane on the NYPD? McClane FREEZES. How much do they know? 233 THORNBURG - IN TRAILER 233 Reacts, gleeful, writes down the name. THORSON (to Mary) Get on the phone to our New York affiliate...move, move! 234 POWELL 234 reacts, signals an Aide, who's already writing, too. INTERCUT: 235 MCCLANE AND HANS 235 MCCLANE (fighting to stay calm) Sister Teresa in third grade called me Mr. McClane. My friends call me John Mac. You're neither...shithead. HANS' VOICE I have someone who wants to talk to you. A very special friend who was at the party with you tonight. McClane's face falls. Oh, God. Eyes closed, he waits for the voice that tells him it's all over. ELLIS' VOICE Hello, John boy? McClane's eyes open, showing equal parts of shock and hope. In the office, CAMERA ADJUSTS TO SHOW Ellis as Hans gives him the CB. MCCLANE Ellis? Ellis has a cigarette, and a terrorist brings him a Diet coke. ELLIS John, they're giving me a few minutes to try and talk some sense into you. I know you think you're doing your job, and I can appreciate that, but you're just dragging this thing out. None of us gets out of here until these people can negotiate with the LA police, and they're just not gonna start doing that until you stop messing up the works. MCCLANE (carefully) Ellis, what have you told them? ELLIS I told them we're old friends and you were my guest at the party. McClane sighs, partially relieved. Hans meanwhile, narrows his eyes. MCCLANE Ellis...you shouldn't be doing this... ELLIS Tell me about it. He looks at Hans, who gives him a nod. ELLIS All right...John, listen to me... They want you to tell them where the detonators are. They know people are listening. They want the detonators of they're going to kill me. Ellis gives Hans a big "ok" sign. Hans returns it. 236 INT. POLICE TRAILER - ON POWELL, ROBINSON - SAME 236 and others listening intently. McClane closes his eyes and leans his head back again. He knows what is going to happen, even if this poor bastard Ellis doesn't. ELLIS' VOICE John, didn't you hear me? MCCLANE (to CB, quietly) Yeah, I hear you, you fucking moron! ELLIS John, I think you could get with the program a little. The police are here now. It's their problem. Tell these guys where the detonators are so no one else gets hurt. Hey, I'm putting my life on the line for you buddy... MCCLANE Don't you think I know that! Put Hans on! Hans, listen to me, that shithead doesn't know what kind of scum you are, but I do -- HANS Good. Then you'll give us what we want and save your friend's life. You're not part of this equation. It's time to realize that. Saying this, Hans takes out his gun, points it at Ellis, smiling. Ellis smiles, too. ELLIS What am I, a method actor? Hans, babe, put away the gun. This is radio, not television... MCCLANE That asshole's not my friend! I barely know him! I hate his fucking guts -- (desperately sincere) -- Ellis, for Christ's sake, tell him you don't mean shit to me -- ELLIS John, how can you say that, after all these years--? John? John? Ellis looks at Hans and shrugs, "Well, I tried..." Hans nods understandingly. He takes the CB, presses the TALK button, and in one frighteningly smooth motion brings the Walther up to Ellis' forehead and PULLS THE TRIGGER. http://movieclips.com/Go3Zz-die-hard-movie-hans-shoots-ellis/

This one stuck out in my head. Works two ways-Janis bragging about how she got one over on Regina George(masked as an apology). And Regina calling Cady a less hot version of herself. From Mean Girls- Tina Fey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZpMlm4xYG4 Janis: [to the female student body] Okay, yeah. I've got an apology. So, I have this friend who is a new student this year. And I convinced her that it would be fun to mess up Regina George's life. So I had her pretend to be friends with Regina, and then she would come to my house after and we would just laugh about all the dumb stuff Regina said. And we gave these candy bar things that would make her gain weight, and then we turned her best friends against her. And then... Oh yeah, Cady - you know my friend Cady? She made out with her boyfriend, and we convinced him to break up with her. Oh, God, and we gave her foot cream instead of face wash. [to Regina] Janis: God! I am so sorry Regina. Really, I don't know why I did this. I guess it's probably because I've got a big *lesbian* crush on you! Suck on *that*! AY-YI-YI-YI-YI-YI! Cady: [after humiliating Regina] Wait Regina, I didn't mean for this to happen! Regina: To find out that everyone hates me? I don't care! Cady: Wait Regina, just listen! Regina: No! Do you know what everyone says about you behind your back? Hmm? They say that you're a homeschooled jungle freak, that's a less hot version of me! Yeah, so don't try to act so innocent! You can take that fake apology, and shove it right up your hairy c... [Regina gets hit by a bus]

Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond's "Some Like it Hot," in this scene, Wilder and Diamond reveal the art of sophisticated bragging, and worked in the film's title. :) TRIVIA: Tony Curtis, when playing the Junior alter-ego, impersonated Cary Grant's voice. EW.com asked him about it: "Did Cary Grant ever say anything about your impersonation?" "Billy ran the movie for him and asked what he thought and Cary said [imitating Grant]: 'I don't talk like that!'" (source: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,1216838,00.html) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7frBOMcnLp0 Scene is from: http://www.public.asu.edu/~srbeatty/394/SomeLikeItHot.pdf He buries himself behind the Wall Street Journal again. Sugar hesitates for a second, then throws the ball back to the girls. She steps closer to Joe, peers around the paper, studying him. SUGAR? Haven't I seen you somewhere before? JOE (without looking up) Not very likely. SUGAR ?Are you staying at the hotel? JOE Not at all. SUGAR Your face is familiar. JOE ?Possible you saw it in a newspaper -- or magazine -- Vanity Fair -- SUGAR That must be it. JOE (waving her aside) Would you mind moving just a little? You're blocking my view. SUGAR Your view of what? JOE? They run up a red-and-white flag on the yacht when it's time for cocktails. SUGAR (snapping at the bait) You have a yacht? and looks seaward at a half-a-dozen yachts of sizes bobbing in the distance. SUGAR (continuing) Which one is yours -- the big one? JOE ?Certainly not. With all that unrest in the world, I don't think anybody should have a yacht that sleeps more than twelve. SUGAR ?I quite agree. Tell me, who runs up that flag -- your wife? JOE No, my flag steward. SUGAR ?And who mixes the cocktails -- your wife? JOE? No, my cocktail steward. Look, if you're interested in whether I'm married or not -- SUGAR ?I'm not interested at all. JOE Well, I'm not. SUGAR That's very interesting. Joe resumes reading the paper. Sugar sits on the sand beside his chair. SUGAR (continuing) How's the stock market? JOE (lackadaisically) Up, up, up. SUGAR ?I'll bet just while we were talking, you made like a hundred thousand dollars. JOE? Could be. Do you play the market? SUGAR? No -- the ukulele. And I sing. JOE ?For your own amusement? SUGAR? Well -- a group of us are appearing at the hotel. Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopators. JOE You're society girls? SUGAR? Oh, yes. Quite. You know -- Vassar, Bryn Mawr -- we're only doing this for a lark. JOE? Syncopators -- does that mean you play that fast music -- jazz? SUGAR Yeah. Real hot. JOE? Oh. Well, I guess some like it hot. But personally, I prefer classical music. SUGAR ?So do I. As a matter of fact, I spent three years at the Sheboygan Conservatory of Music. JOE? Good school! And your family doesn't object to your career? SUGAR? They do indeed. Daddy threatened to cut me off without a cent, but I don't care. It was such a bore -- coming-out parties, cotillions -- JOE Inauguration balls -- SUGAR Opening of the Opera -- JOE Riding to hounds -- SUGAR ?-- and always the same Four Hundred. JOE? You know, it's amazing we never ran into each other before. I'm sure I would have remembered anybody as attractive as you. SUGAR? You're very kind. I'll bet you're also very gentle -- and helpless -- JOE I beg your pardon? SUGAR ?You see, I have this theory about men with glasses. JOE What theory? SUGAR ?Maybe I'll tell you when I know you a little better. What are you doing tonight? JOE Tonight? SUGAR ?I thought you might like to come to the hotel and hear us play. JOE ?I'd like to -- but it may be rather difficult. SUGAR Why? JOE (his eyes on the pail with the shells)?I only come ashore twice a day -- when the tide goes out. SUGAR Oh? JOE? It's on the account of the shells. That's my hobby. SUGAR You collect shells? JOE (taking a handful of shells from the pail)?Yes. So did my father and my grandfather -- we've all had this passion for shells -- that's why we named the oil company after it. SUGAR (wide-eyed) Shell Oil? JOE? Please -- no names. Just call me Junior.

This dialogue is notable because it's really funny. The screenwriting takeaway is to try and write scenes, and movies, as funny as this: Ron Burgundy: I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal. Veronica Corningstone: Really.
