That's a shame about Douglas. I loved reading THE RAGMAN'S SON. One of the more interesting claims Douglas makes in the book was that Kubrick wanted to abandon the original, edgy draft of PATHS OF GLORY in favor of a more homogenized version that would have a better chance for box office success. Douglas claims that he had to force Kubrick to shoot the edgier script which turned out to be one of my favorite films and many others I'm sure. Your post makes me wonder how much of that story and others may have been embellished or even created by Douglas.

The thing about "true stories" is either the author believes they are true (which can be misinformation or self-delusion) or the author *wants* you to believe they are true. I don't think many people set out to lie, but then most of us aren't very good at being honest with ourselves. Thanks very much to Tom for setting the record straight on this one! I look forward to reading more of his posts.
