Great stuff, Shaula. I haven't seen either of these but I just put both of them in my Netflix queue. Just last week I rewatched Grand Illusion and next up is La Bete Humaine which I've never seen either. Looks like there's a Jean Gabin festival happening at my house.

Thank you, Teddy. And I'm green with envy about your Gabin-fest! I'm overdue for one myself. If Netflix still has it, you might want to crown your festival line-up with Touchez Pas au Grisbi ("Don't touch the loot"), the 1954 Jacques Becker film about an aging gangster forced out of retirement. Gabin gives a magnificent performance as Max, the main character (he won the 1954 Venice festival Volpi Cup as Best Actor for it), and the role is credited with relaunching his career, which had suffered since the end of WWII. Another one of my favourite films.
