PSYCHO is my third favorite film of all time, so by rights, as soon as I got the news that Van Sant was planning his desecration, I should have gotten spruced up in Mother's Sunday best, put on a wig, grabbed the biggest kitchen knife I could lay my hands on, bopped over to Van Sant's pad and stabbed him to death in the shower.
But you know what? As idiotic an enterprise as it was, I really enjoyed Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO. It was like watching it beamed in from an alternate universe. I loved that our first glimpse of "Mother" was accompanied by Slim Whitman on the soundtrack, and I was haunted by Danny Elfman's score underneath the credits as the camera pulled back from Marion Crane's car being pulled out of the swamp.
