Question, Scott: can a person submit multiple loglines within one email? Also, if there is a particular development or "twist" in one's script idea that would make a logline stronger if revealed in the logline but would then obviously spoil the development/surprise, should one avoid putting in the logline if possible?

Jason, you may submits multiple loglines within one email. Just make sure to apply the "Is this a movie?" level of assessment to all of them. Re the twist: Typically I advise writers NOT to include that in a logline they submit to managers, but if you think it will help sell ME about the quality and potential of your idea, you may go ahead and include the twist.

If I make it through the first cut and I have to send you the best I've ever written, would I need to restrict myself to one piece, or could I send you both a short story and a script (i.e. a first act)? The reason I'm asking is because I tend to write differently when writing short stories as compared to scripts/screenplays.

Preston, that is true: Everyone who applies for "The Quest" gets a free 1-week SMC class, either Core or Craft. You may see the entire schedule of classes through the end of 2012 here. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, probably between 3-5 "Quest" applicants per class depending upon enrollment. I repeat all the Core and Craft classes, so if you miss out on a class this time around, there will be other opportunities down the road.

Yes, assuming there are no rights issues. I'm not a lawyer but it's my understanding if it is a public figure, you can do pretty much what you want story-wise a la Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. But if there is a book that you want to use as the basis for the screenplay, then you would need to secure those rights.

Yes, I meant if you ARE a member of the WGA, but have NOT made enough $$ to qualify in screenwriting and TV, you are eligible. If you are NOT a member of the WGA, but have made SOME [small] money screenwriting, you are eligible.

Scott- Could we submit a poem as an example of our writing?

It depends upon how long it is as I would want to get a good sense of your writing and voice. I am not a student of poetry, but I have been reading a poem pretty much every morning for the last several years. To me good scene description is more like poetry than prose. So again, yes, but the poem (or poems) would have to be of enough length for me to get a read on the writer.
