This is truly generous. Thanks for offering to do this. Would it be asking too much to require the winners to give something back to the community when they finish the course, such as guest posts or podcasts where they share their experiences? Kind of a pay it forward type of thing?

pliny, it's for feature films. It's what I know, it's what I love, it's where my connections are. Who knows where things lead, but for now I'm focusing on movie spec scripts.

This is a fantastic initiative, Scott, and one that makes total sense to me. In fact, I've often pondered ways in which you could provide members of the GITS community with just this very service, although the version I envisioned included a contract that stated that you (GITS) would receive a percentage of any script sell resulting from the course. That way, you could pick the most promising (and probably most financially crippled) candidates, provide them with a top notch education for free, then potentially receive a greater amount of cash down river should they sell the script(s) they'd worked on with you (or perhaps the first script they sell over x amount) than you would have had they paid for the course(s) separately - a kinda long tail thang. But of course, free works just fine for me! I can feel the buzz around this already - everyone will be beavering away from now until the 21st to either polish their existing loglines or come up with new ones. Talk about motivation! And those who don't get picked will most likely have generated a slew of script worthy ideas to work on. Good luck with The Quest, Scott, and to those talented four you pick.

Sounds wonderful. Seriously, everyone talks about how insular and tight the script writing crowd is but since i have lingered on the fringes here at GOTS (and also over at Scriptshadow) I have felt nothing but support. @Amma Salmi. Even if I could have taken part, I would have tweeted and shared like I have. "Mean and selfish" goes completely against the spirit of this project. Improve the odds by coming up with a great concept. I have a little faith in yourself.

Scott, This is very interesting...I'm already seeing my loglines differently. Feels different when they're really going to be evaluated with something at stake. I'm taking them more seriously myself-what have I really got here?

Amazing idea and right in line with what drew me to your sight in the first place - it was that list of wishes for you (me) in the new year. You really have the capacity to out-perform studio based producers and generate great projects. I have never encountered someone who can communicate with writers in such a way that promotes better writing as opposed to endless notes from seven different points of view, all conflicting in unworkable ways. (In my experience) The main reason projects fall apart is because there is a creative misunderstanding that cannot be solved because most young producers are actually lawyers or ex-insurance salesman. After I co-wrote TIGERLAND I got lost in a system that made no sense to me. I sold a pitch, got hired for an assignment, made some loot but was creatively miserable and my desire to write diminished. I will submit an idea when you release more details on Monday. Anybody that gets picked will be lucky because you're not going to break them - you will build them up and that makes you a Saint.

Michael, that's one of the things about this 24-week workshop: It's not just about writing a screenplay, it's about teaching the participant to think like a professional writer and develop a set of writing practices to ground them in the reality of what it takes to BE a professional writer. Plus because there is ample dialogue between participants and myself, we devote a lot of time to the business side of screenwriting as well. More Monday.

I don't know if this will be covered in your Monday post, but I was curious how you felt about books to be adapted for film? There is one I have been thinking would translate wonderfully to the big screen.

Jill, you can pitch as many loglines as you want. But I will be wearing my 'producer's hat' with a VERY high mark to hit in terms of the story's marketability. As I indicated, I'm only interested in strong story concepts in the major genres. I will provide much more information on Monday.

SB, in order for me to consider a project for "The Quest" based on a book, the writer in question would have to obtain an option to the rights of the book. That's not as hard as it sounds, if the rights are available and if the owners of the rights aren't demanding a huge sum of money. I've known writers who have gotten options on books for a dollar [seriously]. So if you're interested in that route, get started now to see if the rights are available. If you don't know how to do that, contact the book's publishing company to start that process.

Yes, MTF. I have major respect for 'below-the-line' people in the film and TV business, and love to see them succeed as writers if that's their dream. That said my focus is on providing an alternate way into Hollywood for outsiders.
