When desperate people look to the divine for help, it is up to the writer to bring their gaze down and look to each other. Unless you plan to write God in as a character, these stories follow this natural progression: look to thyself and find no strength, reach out around you and find no one, fall to your knees and beg for a miracle, find another lonely soul nearby crying out for one as well, find the spark of the divine in each other.
I like stories like these, though. People are lonely. Writing stories like this offer a little hope that loneliness will soon be abated.
