A writer ignores those between the script and the audience to his folly -- and often pays the price when that leads to poor box office. Writers first have to please people who don't buy tickets, who read dozens of scripts a week and who want to read something "new." Genres are tried and true for sound reasons, but regardless of audience tastes, producers, execs, directors, and stars -- whose tastes can be quite different from mainstream audiences -- must buy in first. THEY have to say a script would make a movie THEY would want to see well before any audience gets a vote. As a result, making audiences happy is often not on a writer's radar, though it should be on EVERYONE'S.
