I think Hugh Ross is an underrated part of this film. His voice is so perfect as the Narrator that I can't read the dialogue above without hearing his voice and cadence. What I like about the voice-over in specific is how it amplifies the sadness of Robert Ford beyond what we see on screen. The contrast between how people reacted to James' death and how they will react to Ford's death gives us - the audience - the only moment in the film that we actually feel sorry for the man.

A magnificent film, my pick for most underrated US film of the last decade or so. I think of it as the BARRY LYNDON of Westerns, both films chart the rise and fall of two empty souls.
