I know this is way after the fact, but are news stories considered to be in the public domain? Since this one is true story about a living person, if you wanted to tell this specific story, you would need to option it, right?

Samantha, I'm not a lawyer, I don't play one on TV, so this really requires some legal expertise. But there does seem to be a kind of switch that gets flipped so that if the person is public enough, then they are in the public domain. But I don't know how to determine that. The easiest thing you can do, which TV series like "Law & Order" have been doing for years, is simply change names and some of the circumstances to make the story different enough from the real thing.
