Wow, now I'm starting to figure out where the slew of horrid multiplex movies are being breed. At spec script level. Is this a joke? About 90% of these aren't original, and show a complete lack of creativity. And what's with some of these log lines - they're terrible, and way too long. I refuse to believe that these are the best screenplay's studios are receiving.

Three things. First, the loglines are drawn from anonymous types, not necessarily or even likely the writer, so we can't expect them to stack up to our own standards. Second, as noted here ad naseum, the operating principle in the Hollywood acquisition game is 'similar but different.' They rarely stray too much into the 'different' side of things. Third, it's up to us as consumers to push the studios to make more creative fare. All the studios care about is money. Period. If movie audiences responded to, let's say for example, a new wave of 70s style independent minded cinema, then Hollywood would start focusing on a new wave of 70s style independent minded cinema. As long as consumers are willing to plunk down dollars to see this sequel or that remake, then Hollywood will keep producing those type of films. Fortunately there are things like the Black List which spotlights good stories and good writing, and hopefully will continue to emerge as a way of helping worthy interesting films get made. And, of course, there is always the indie film market which we all should make a point of supporting.
