I'd throw in some mystery, add a thriller edge: The boy knows a secret about the fire that killed the firefighter. It's not just empathy that compels him to go to the funeral, it's guilt. Maybe he could have done something, maybe he did do something... And when another uninvited guest at the funeral, a shadowy man, spots our boy, our boy realizes he's not the only one with secrets.
