That was big of him to apologize. It's refreshing to read. Though some might argue that the only reason he did was because villagers were massing at his door with pitchforks, Mr. Eggers still bucked up, saw the error of his ways, and apologized. I sense a real change in him here, not just "I'm sorry I got caught"-type apology, but a true penitence. The other reason I'm apt to believe his apology is the fact he did something we all do from time to time: rant about a movie and the creative forces behind it. He just did it in a very poor, very specific, very public way.
ShaneTilston at 2012-03-26 18:27:15:
Interesting. He seems legitimately sorry, as he should be. The only bummer is that I'm sure way more people will have read his scathing "hatchet job" than will read his more well thought-out apology....
Teddy Pasternak at 2012-03-26 18:38:59:
Yeah, that was big of him and he seems genuinely sorry. "Is there actually any real interest in an online piece that is simply a celebration?" Toph, you should visit Go Into The Story more often.

It's not wrong to have an opinion, Toph Eggers. Even a snarky one. What is wrong is that when people read your article they were judging the writer, not the work. There is no need to kneel and worship at the alter of apology. But hey - that's just my opinion.
Matthew Rigdon at 2012-03-26 20:07:14:
I'm not sure about "way more" people. Way more people read the headline, but I doubt they bothered to read the article. It shows the way the internet goes. It's not enough to have "Man bites dog" as a headline. It has to be "Rob Kardashian bites Lassie". I thought that part of what he pointing out in the article is the way actors and directors are treated in the press when they make a bad movie, as opposed to how writers are treated (not that writers should be treated that way, but neither should actors and directors). If that was his intention at all, it got lost. At least Mr. Eggers didn't act like Mike Daisey (the bar is really low these days).

Nice job Mr Eggers. As a strong believer in The Law of Attraction, I now think Toph will see some good come his way... as opposed to anonymous Anthrax in the mail ;-) I would like to offer my own apology in return: Sorry for calling you a f***king douchebag who needs his mouth and fingers gaffer taped! Peace and goodwill to all my "fellow troops in the trenches" :-)

Do you think Mr. Koren will take Toph up on his offer for free labor? These are fascinating times.
Lisa at 2012-03-26 23:49:55:
Hmmm... it's times like this when we learn that writing and drinking don't mix.

Scott, this needs to be a more talked-about topic! Writer vs material? Who's to blame? Very interesting!

When I saw the original article, I stopped reading after the first paragraph. By his own admission it was a bitchy article and I think the business is hard enough without engaging in that sort of attitude unnecessarily. Pleased he's seen the error of his ways. It felt genuine to me. Just hope Mr Koren feels better but I had the same thought about who was going to see the apology. Damage done.
brendan howley at 2012-03-27 08:56:21:
That's a genuine apology: Mr Eggers has done all he can to right the wrong done. The ball's now in two courts. SALON needs to retract the article as written and republish with Mr Eggers' apology---SALON is equally at fault here w/r/t the actual publication and headline. And Mr Koren has an interesting moral choice: ignore the Eggers overture or act on it. I'm hoping he acts...simply because it's the most interesting outcome, to see if these two guys can find a reconciliation. Me, I'm thinking the whole scenario ain't such a bad set-up for a movie ;)

Screenwriter Craig Maizin responded to Toph's letter on Twitter: "Toph Eggers responds. Good on you, Toph. That took guts, and guts on the internet is a rarity. All is forgiven." https://twitter.com/#!/clmazin

I call bullshit. It's like calling your wife or mother a "cunt" and then asking them out to dinner. No thanks, pal. This was not some quick article that was pieced together and fell through the cracks and landed on Salon.com Toph and the Editor knew exactly what they were doing. So much in fact Toph actually tried to raise money on a website to stop this Screenwriter from working on his next project. All that effort, creating a page and what people will receive at certain donation denominations. That took considerable effort. And there's no mention of that here. Childish prickery, Toph. And a liar to boot. And then you offer your "free services" on the very project you were raising money to stop? People donated! If you bang a hooker and you get aids, and she offers you a FREEBIE and unprotected. Wow, what a deal. What a dirty, filthy, lowbrow deal. The one article, really? Had this gone as planned and people thought Toph's antics were funny. I guarantee you he would be whistling a different tune right now. What, no you're sorry? You realize now that you're an ass? I'm sorry I forgot the professional creative collective needed to revitalize and massage your faith in the artistic community. What a boob. Here, nurse at the sugary tit of regret. It wasn't creative or funny or bullying. It was idiotic.

I commend the apology. It's not easy to own up to a mistake. And doing so should be embraced and championed. It's interesting that someone who has made a career out of snarky columns didn't realize it until literally millions of people called him out for being a douche. Every piece of his I've read (including the one that bit him in the ass) have been over-the-top sensationalistic opinion pieces. If he didn't think he was writing that (to the point of loathing people that write those things), I wonder what it is he thought he was doing?
