I think we have to be careful to critique the screen story - eg, the story that made it to the screen, wherever each element of it may have come from - rather than "Joe Screenwriter's story". Unless we have a copy of each draft of the script, we don't know what Joe Screenwriter wrote, and we have no business blaming him for any specific element.
On a more general note: as a fellow writer suggested to me when I set up my blog, there's a lot to be said for letting some time elapse before attacking the weaknesses of a story. If I'm talking publicly about a film that's still on general release, I try to pick up on the good things about it, not the bad ones. There'll be time to learn from those later, when everyone involved is feeling less fragile...
