Have you done apologies yet? Begging forgiveness comes in all shades, with all manner and species of stakes on the line...

Daily Dialogue Idea Refusal of the call: 1) Star Wars, by George Lucas, 4th Draft There is a little static and the transmission is cut short. Old Ben leans back and scratches his head. He silently puffs on a tarnished chrome water pipe. Luke has stars in his eyes. BEN You must learn the ways of the Force if you're to come with me to Alderaan. LUKE (laughing) Alderaan? I'm not going to Alderaan. I've got to go home. It's late, I'm in for it as it is. BEN I need your help, Luke. She needs your help. I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. LUKE I can't get involved! I've got work to do! It's not that I like the Empire. I hate it! But there's nothing I can do about it right now. It's such a long way from here. BEN That's your uncle talking. LUKE (sighing) Oh, God, my uncle. How am I ever going to explain this? BEN Learn about the Force, Luke. LUKE Look, I can take you as far as Anchorhead. You can get a transport there to Mos Eisley or wherever you're going. BEN You must do what you feel is right, of course.

How about Statement of Theme, that little thing that Blake Snyder tells us has to happen on page 5. And including the build up to the statement so we can look at how it gets expressed in the context of the whole scene.

Some Twitter suggestions: @TiffanyLeigh: Last words? Subsets of which may include: dying/deathbed, goodbyes, or even final lines of movies. @jamescraig2000: Protector reveals to the Hunted that theyre Targeted ie Reese to Sarah Connor. [Protector - Target] @al_grinter: staring death in the face' dialogue scene (no country for old men has a few of those if i remember correctly...)

To go with GITS's theme last week, what about dialogue that inspires? First one that comes to mind is this one from Dead Poet's Society: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQtmGcdSDAI Carpe Diem. Seize the day boys, seize the day. Should give us all a little of that creative juju. :)

How bout long, snarky replies? This from National Treasure: Powell: Look... this is a waste of time. How could a ship wind up way out here? Riley Poole: Well, I'm no expert but... it could be that the hydrothermic properties of this region produce hurricane-force ice storms that cause the ocean to freeze and then melt and then refreeze, resulting in a semisolid migrating land mass that would land a ship right around here.

I'm for the suggestions of John Penny and Ryan Smith as I really would love to see daily dialog specifically aimed at portraying screenwriting concepts. Refusal of the call Statement of Theme

Led Zeppelin references! The Client (1994) Reggie: [upon seeing Mark's Led Zeppelin t-shirt] You like Led Zeppelin? Mark: Yeah. Do YOU like Led Zeppelin? Reggie: Oh, sure. They were a great band. Reggie: I bet you've never even heard of Led Zeppelin. I bet you're just one of them grown ups who just pretends to like really cool bands just to get close to little punks like me. Reggie: Well, I think we've covered just about everything... Mark: Ok, what's you're favorite Led Zeppelin song? Reggie: um... Moby Dick, live version. Bitchin' drum solo. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) Mike Damone: First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV. The Rock (1996) John Mason: Your mother, well... she was very special. Jade Angelou: Yes, she was. But I dont think that we should romanticize what happened between you and her. Meeting in a bar after a Led Zeppelin concert, ya know? And I was the result. John Mason: Well, I'd like to think it would have led somewhere if only... Jade Angelou: If only what? Six federal marshals hadn't kicked down her door and dragged you back to prison? - Okay, I just had to get that out of my system :) Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Okay, let's see if we can do a screenwriting lesson the next two weeks: This week refusal of the call [Ryan]. Next week statement of theme [John]. The challenge will be to come up with good examples. I think we've got some good ideas for the next several weeks as well. I'll post a schedule for those later today. Thanks for your ideas!
Teddy Pasternak at 2012-03-04 16:50:29:
All joking aside, those are both good themes. I'd like to see an "All Is Lost Moment" week as well, eventually.
Scott at 2012-03-04 17:31:56:
We can do that, Teddy. Go through as many of the narrative archetype moments as we want. Know why? [James Cagney accent] 'Coz I own da joint, see?
