I think it was in Mamet's book on directing that he said people worry too much on making their intent come through, because things like intent and soul will magically reveal themselves in the work. It's one of my favorite aspects of writing, acting, and directing. Some essence of the creator(s)--who you are, in how you see the world, and what you want yourself and the world to be--will reveal itself, whether you want it to or not. Your work and your choices give clues about who you are. This interview really reveals part of what makes Pixar so great; that somehow, as a whole company, there's still a core identity and value set of who they are. It's a rare thing to be able to say, but it's entirely clear in their body of work that they all follow one North Star.

Which is also a long-winded way of saying thank you for this interview. It's a nourishing read.

Thanks so much Mary - just about the best interview I have ever read about film making. I only have one question - why doesn't every studio do it this way? Here in Australia it seems like a perfect model for how we should be spending the millions of dollars of public money we throw at film: more on development less on production. For one thing, it seems like if you get the development part right the funding for production will take care of itself. Thanks again Mary (and Scott for bring it to us!)
