Hey Scott, I have a question. I loved War Horse - thought it was masterfully made and classically affective, a very beautiful film indeed. I know it's adapted material, however, in listening to cast interviews I discovered that a lot of scenes were written not by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis but by Spielberg "on the fly" the day of shooting. How is the script considered for awards? Is it seen as an independent entity unrelated to the final film? Thanks.

Many filmmakers end up shooting movies "on the fly," some due to improvisational background such as films by Judd Apatow, others just due to the exigencies of production. This is nothing new. "Casablanca" never had a completed script with pages written and submitted the day of the shoot. So there is a bit of wink-wink-nod-nod going on in terms of various awards for screenplays.
