This is the pivotal scene where Luke gets his nick name, and a positive nick name to boot. Earlier we get this: SOCIETY RED: Dragline gives out names here. You'll get yours when he figures you out. DRAGLINE: Maybe we oughta call you No-Ears. You don't listen much, do you, boy? LUKE: Ain't heard much worth listening to yet. Just everybody handing out rules. The other prisoners' admiration for Luke starts earlier after he refuses to give up the boxing fight even though Dragline clearly has him beat. After winning the poker game, his acceptance by Dragline and the other prisoners is sealed and it's when the others truly start to idolize him. Much like McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest who defies Nurse Ratched at every chance he gets, and in turn gains respect from the other patients, Luke shows the other inmates that you can be an individual and "win" by not submitting to the powers that be, even if you have "nuthin'". Interestingly, both characters suffer similar fates in the end. By the way, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest also features a memorable card game scene.

Teddy, thanks for that analysis. I had thought of Cuckoo's Nest as a possibility for this week. We'll see if it magically winds up as a DD in the next few days. And yes, agreed re Paul Newman. What a terrific actor and humanitarian. I not only got the opportunity to meet him, I also got to visit with his daughter Nell who convinced her father to start a line of organic foods under the Newman's Own brand. Quite a family!
