There is an app for Macs (maybe pc too) called SelfControl that shuts the internet off. What's cool is you're allowed to have a list of websites you can keep access to, or only have access to. http://visitsteve.com/made/selfcontrol/

Thanks for that, Marc. Cool app!

I think this will be my biggest challenge -- blocking out time dedicated to writing. I have no trouble tuning out the internet as the netbook I typically write on only has 2GB RAM and connects too slowly. I also tend to use a bagel shop or bar/grill as my "office" so I don't trust the free WiFI. But that app sounds good and I'll check it out for home use.

I've heard good things about SelfControl from my daughter, who's a graphic designer. Right now, I'm testing "Freedom" -- advocated by John August and Craig Mazin -- which cuts off your network connection completely for the amount of time you dial into it each session. If you need to override it, you simply restart your Mac. Initial signup comes with 5 free trial sessions: Details: macfreedom.com.
