Wow, what am amazing script-to-screen example. The filmed version is substantially different from the script! Two things that seem to be in the film but missing from the script - but perhaps they were set up before this excerpt: 1. That he is not alone, he is riding with the woman. I suspect that this is an actual change… as she had some dialogue. 2. The chaos in the streets, where the little girl is walking - the number of people, the action and movement, the degree of violence - is not apparent in this excerpt. I am especially curious if that was set up in the page(s) before, or if this has been emphasized in the filmed version. Some differences between script and film: - It cuts back to him on the hilltop more times (7, as opposed to 4 in the script). - The woman being there with Schindler - The red shoes shot has been eliminated, and the idea of the SS man nudging the girl is gone - in the film, no one notices her at all. - Schindler does not dismount (which I actually had trouble visualizing as I read it - he would get a better view from up high on the horse, so it was not clear why he would dismount unless it was a cliff edge). To me, the “magic” that comes in from the film, which is not so apparent in the script, is because the girl is so tiny, and she is not bright red as I visualized, but a barely noticeable washed-out red. She is obscured in many of the scenes, or enters late - which makes us, the viewers, really search for her. As Schindler is. It makes us watch for her as intently as he is, puts us right in his head.
