Hey all, My name is Nathan Ruegger and I'm writer-director of thrillers with a taste of family drama. My life in a nutshell: I was born in suburban L.A. to an actress and an Emmy-winning producer who raised me on a steady diet of Hitchcock movies as I grew up in Hollywood's big dream factory -- where I saw some of its nightmares that keep me writing features in the territory between crime thrillers and family dramas. Though I have not "followed" GITS for very long, I've been quite well aware of it for years and have linked to it often. And while not a part of my specific coming-upness as a writer, I've known it be an intelligent, thriving community like several of the ones I've patronized over the years. It's an understatement to say that it's a good thing that it's here. I worked as a studio reader for 4.5 before selling GOING THE DISTANCE in 2008. Since then, I've been lucky enough to have set up several projects with different studios and production companies. Maybe one day I'll be even luckier and get another one produced. Hello everyone, I'm Jackie. I'm completely new to this site - I just discovered it last week, and posted my first comments (and a short intro to myself) yesterday, in the Shakespeare in Love discussion. But I'll post a bit about myself here, too, even though it repeats a bit... just to get my intro in the correct thread. I've been a fulltime writer for about 12 years now, but I'm pretty new to screenwriting. I've got a few successful nonfiction books published (which you can check out on my website, www.jacquelinewindh.com) and have written articles, essays etc. for various magazines and newspapers. I also am a professional photographer, and I also do freelance radio stuff - writing, recording and producing short documentaries (mainly for Canada's CBC Radio - many of those are also posted on my website). I have wanted to start working in film for a long time now, and have taken a kind of strange and roundabout route to it - as a writer, as a photographer, and by layering sound into my radio stories. So I feel like I am slowly building all of the elements that I need to create stories for film. And obviously the narrative component is the most important one. So I am also working on my MFA in Creative Writing at UBC (Vancouver, British Columbia - it is an online program, so I live a few hours away, on central Vancouver Island). We are required to work in three genres in this program, but I have made screenwriting my main genre. I am in my final year, and well advanced in my first screenplay - and extremely excited both about the current project (a drama) and about focussing more on writing for the big screen in the future. So I am very excited about this website and the whole screenwriting community here. I know Vancouver is a pretty good place to be for the film industry... but I still am not IN Vancouver (I can get there pretty quickly). So for now I am really excited about getting to know the rest of you, and participating in this community. Hi, Just found this blog recently, and it's been a great read! I'll be following it closely from here on out. I'm a student at University of Massachusetts in Boston, and I've done a bit of directing and stage managing in theater, as well as handful of other things. I just started a screenplay of my own, and really the worst part's been learning when to shut up. Writing fiction for years before this means the habit of being a bit wordy's been a hard one to break. Unofficially, (keeping this to myself) my writing tastes tend to run toward action/adventure, science fiction and fantasy in the vein of the big-budget classics we were all weaned on: Star Wars; Raiders; Die Hard, etc. But if anyone in Hollywood asks, please tell them I love writing movies based on board games. Preferably board games that were used in graphic novels and, ideally, which can be played on an elevator with the devil. What can I say? Contained elevator board-game horror is my "thing." Anyway, I've been a fan of GITS going on two years now, and I'm constantly impressed by the creative insights and support Scott and the site's users have to offer. Over the years, we shared some laughs, advice and cake. OK, no cake, but I always felt the offer of cake was there, unspoken. That's how cool things are around here.

Hey everyone, I think this marks a milestone for me. Today, I can unabashedly say "I am a writer." I will still maintain that I want to continue directing and making films, but I finally feel like I am every part as equal a writer as I am a director. (So, there's a nice long way to go :)) Right now, I'm working on a short film script involving time travel, which I hope to shoot in a year or so. In the meantime, while I continue working on scripts, not to mention my full time job, I want to start making short (<5min) films every month or two. It's been a year since I last shot something, and I really miss it. I'm up in the Seattle area, so if anyone wants to join in, gimme a shout! Anyway, I've been following this blog for a couple of years now, and I definitely find it, Scott, and the GITS community to be awesome. My name is John Casu, and I work in supercomputers by day. I've been writing for just about a year, mostly on action/thriller type material. So far, I've written two tv pilot scripts, and two movie scripts, and my first pilot, Rose Cross, got to the semis of the Creative World Awards. Why do I want to do this? Because after years of complaining about how unintelligent movies and tv shows tend to be, it was time to put up or shut up. And because people in Hollywood are far less venal than those in Silicon Valley.

I trained in NYC to be an actor and took two screenwriting courses that breathed new-life into my hopes; two shorts scripts - one original, one adaptation - found me ecstatic to write. Life stepped in and demanded that I mend some relationships, so I left the city, hoping to resolve the dire matters, hoping to stay connected to the artistic community. Now, at 30 years of age, I'm married almost eight years, have two children, teach full-time and part-time, and am half way through an MFA program for script and screenwriting; a few short scripts, one stage play, and two feature length screenplays (though they still need rewrites) are under my belt. Professional writing and teaching are my aspirations, my dreams, my goals.

Hello everyone! I'm Melinda. I'm originally from Texas but I moved to Istanbul this summer. I formerly worked as a magazine editor but for last two years taught high-school English and journalism while occasionally freelancing for magazines (mostly travel). I am new to screenwriting. I took a continuing education class at SMU last spring because there is a specific book I dream of adapting. (Unfortunately, a producer holds the rights though hasn't done anything with it.) So I'm working on an original idea - it's a historical adventure and I'm nearing the end of the research phase. This is a great website, Scott. Hey GITS'ers! I'm Vince and I found this site several months ago, pretty much addicted since. Between this and Johnaugust.com, I feel these are the best two sites for screenwriting, IMHO. I recently did a two week course on concept with Tom Benedek which was great and I just started my first script. Yikes, what did I get myself into?? Don't try this at home - I'm working backwards. I actually started in the industry, worked for great people, raised financing and produced a feature film. For reasons that are currently being re-examined, I left and started a new career. But like Pacino says (and I apologize for the redundancy), "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." Hi folks! I'm Billie Bates. I'm originally from Australia but now live in the USA. It's so nice to feel connected to a writing community when you don't live in LA. I'm a Chicago-outer-suburban housewife who spends the winters in San Diego. I'm hoping one of these winters I'll be frequently commuting to LA! I started screenwriting a year ago when I decided to adapt my chick-lit novel (read: trashy women's fiction) into a script. After all, If I can write a 300 page novel, I can write a 90 page screenplay, right? Ha! Needless to say, the past twelve months have seen me obsessively taking screenwriting classes, mostly through SMC. It's tough to work twelve hours a day and still find time to write, so even though I'm 24, I've only written one feature spec, two TV specs, and five packets for late-night shows. As a female comedy writer, I feel like my voice needs to be heard, so I've picked up the pace and am on track to finish another two TV specs and a pilot soon. I also have a treatment, outline, and first act of my 2nd feature spec. I'm a big fan of romcoms and teen coms, and hope to continue writing and working my way up in either (or both?) TV and film. NY'ers, we should definitely have our own GITS meetup!

annie, the fact you have six original screenplays in hand should bolster your confidence in approaching agents and managers. BTW you may have more luck with managers as they - in my experience - tend to be more open to reading new material. Just lob loglines out to a zillion managers and see what happens. Todd Ireland, Hello everyone. I have been lurking for several month but only visited the site recently. I am a 10 year vet working in Production on features and tv. I co-wrote a six issue comic book series and one graphic novel. Decided to move into writing full time after working as the assistant to the showrunner on ABC/Global's "Combat Hospital" earlier this year. I attended this year's Austin Film fest and made it to the Finals in the Pitch Competition. Hey. Lucy here! 25, originally from the UK. Moved to Vancouver about 18 months ago. I studied film at university and took one screenwriting class. Interned for a few movies, including one in New York before I decided I wanted to be the one to tell the stories and not be the one who had to stop passers by from ruining a shot. Currently working as a server, the most amount of money for a relatively part time job. Allowing me to write as often as I can. Just finished my third feature length. Currently researching and outlining for my fourth. I write romance/drama/sci fi. Haven't submitted anything to competitions. I don't feel like any of it is worthy or up to standard. Although I know my screenwriting is improving everyday thanks to sites like GITS. Would greatly appreciate forming relationships with other writers within the genres I write in. Hey Scott, I'm not sure if you remember when I posted on this last time. I think it was at the beginning of the year or this same time last. Anyway, I am a writer,director,producer from New Jersey moving to NYC soon. I started off with one goal this year and brought in another. I was planning on pure screen writing goals but ended up assistant directing 3 short films and will be done with a fourth by the end of the year. Next year my goal, as always, is to keep writing, and instead of assistant directing for projects I co-wrote, I am going to be directing my own projects. I'm currently working on setting up a film festival in New York which caters to and provides distribution to first time filmmakers called first time fest which will be up and running by this time next year. If any of you have completed first time projects that you want to place send em our way when we open up for submissions.

Hey Everybody! Daniel Hogan, I've been perusing around this wonderful site for the last year, leaving my mark in the comments box here and there and pasting links to overly energized rants on my temporarily-retired blog. I'm a native Socal surfer who fully lives up to the stereotype, minus the fact that I just finished up my undergrad education at UCLA, graduating top of my class in Environmental Science of all things. You can imagine how bizarre it was for me to go back and forth from Organic Chemistry and energy economics problem sets to the feature I wrote during my senior year. Now I'm an intern (albeit paid) at a production arm of a major studio, taking writing workshops through the UCLA professional program (which I highly recommend), and just trying to thicken my portfolio of low-brow comedies/action-comedies. In fact, I'd say about seventy-two percent of my reason for introducing myself at this moment is due to the fact that I am utterly distraught with my last few scenes, and could really use the unending supply of creative juju that has been floating around this thread. Hi everyone, my name is John Worsley and I'm a lurker. I think the last time I posted was the last introduce yourself post. =) I live in Portland, OR. I turned from fiction writing to screenwriting in spring, 2009, and the first script I wrote (The Black Way) is currently a first round qualifier in the Filmmakers Int'l Screenwriting Contest, so I feel encouraged about my prospects. My other recent success was discovering, at last summer's Willamette Writers Conference, that I can set aside my fear of pitching and do it extemporaneously. I'm also fortunate to be working with an ambitious local director looking to shoot her first feature length film, a long-time passion project. She was smart enough to recognize that while she could write the script by herself, it would be stronger if she enlisted a writer to work with. This will give me the invaluable experience of seeing a script I've worked on turn into a movie much sooner than I expect will happen with Hollywood. My name is Samantha Tucker. I've been an avid reader of GITS for a few months now. I live in Brooklyn, NY. Up until now I've only been involved in theatre - I've written a few short scripts and co-wrote a handful of full length plays. I love film and want to try my hand at screenwriting, but it's a definite change. I've been reading GITS and a few other screenwriting blogs, as well as attempting to read a script a day and watch as many movies as possible. I've got a lot of concepts right now, but I'm not sure which one I want to tackle first. Planning on taking the Concept to Outline course the next time it's offered.
