Most writers in Hollywood work as freelancers, moving from one writing assignment to another. Sometimes they may work predominately at one studio, most at a variety (for example, I have written nearly 30 movie and TV projects at every major studio and broadcast network). Some writers end up with what are known as an "overall deal" with a particular studio. It is a term deal, typically 2 years, which covers their overhead and has built-in incentives based upon the projects they write for the studio. There are considerably fewer overall deals nowadays than there used to be. Later today you will see a post about producer deals that reflect that downward trend.
