Death & destruction might just be a matter of injecting everything with huge stakes, and not necessarily a trend. And it's fall. And the economy is dead and decaying. Or, I have no idea what I'm talking about :D

Alex, your comment reminded me of the time I asked a poet friend to recommend to me a poem about death. He emailed me back: "Scott, all poems are about death." I think in some way, you could make that point about stories. Even the goofiest comedy will, if you look close enough, have something to do with death, however obliquely.
