Armageddon is a good modern ticking clock movie.

As an audience member, you know what the movie's obligatory scene is going to be -- the arrival of the deadline -- but you don't know how it's going to go down and how the protagonist will handle it. You can guess, but you don't know, and that's a big part of the fun.
