It's in my top ten as well. And the scene with singing The Marseilles is up there with "I am Spartacus" among my favourite movie scenes. I don't remember when I first saw it--I don't remember a time when I didn't love it! But I do remember when my father had a business associate from back east in town, and I wound up for dinner with them. The fellow was a huge fan of Casablanca. He's start to quote a line from the film... and I'd finish the line. I wasn't very old at the time and it knocked the guys socks off. Apparently he brought it up every time he had business dealings with my father after that, until they both retired.

The line "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine" kills me every time.

Happy Birthday. It also gave birth to another great movie "The Usual Suspects", dialogue from the penultimate scene "round up the usual suspects."

A charter member of my all-time 5 best movies list. I had had a cheese mirror with Bogart's mug pixelated and painted on it hanging in my dorm room. Every girl friend had to see it and know it. [Not that there were a ton of those...] Favorite lines: "He's just like every other man, only more so." And the bit about coming to Casablanca for the waters. "I was misinformed." "We all try, you succeed," for the sheer millions of times it's since been aped...And the pitter patter between Rick and his pit boss on the roulette wheel, especially the silent bits and looks. In fact, ALL of the secondary characters are just remarkably etched and played. Love and honor and duty. Here's hoping that they are, indeed, concepts with timeless appeal. Lately, I've begun to have my doubts...

Scott, I've always loved the November date because it coincided with the allied invasion of North Africa, America's first fighting step into the European war. (I know, wrong continent, but that's a longer story.). That November 1942, U.S. troops landed at Casablanca, Oran, and Dakar. Maybe we owe more to Bogey than we realize. Which leaves me with a question. Was it coincidence that there was a two month lag from the world premier in November, to Casablanca's release in January? Good for box office, eh?
