Nicholas Kazan wrote and directed an underrated little revenge film in 1993 called Dream Lover, starring James Spader and Mädchen Amick. Swimming With Sharks also comes to mind.

Other revenge stories I've enjoyed are True Grit (remake) and Get Carter (original). Both films are driven by the engine of revenge. [SPOILER] Retrospectively the viewer realises one of the two central storylines in Once Upon a Time in the West was motivated by revenge, in one of cinemas great reveals. [END SPOILER] I think you're spot on with the key reasons revenge stories work, it's the clarity of them. Set up the injustice properly and the audience will accept any level of barbarity from the protagonist, even cheer it on as right and necessary. It's an intoxicating thing to experience.

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN was a twist on the revenge story, in that the wronged man starts to go too far, introducing some gray into the usually black and white arena.
