Here is the "Premium Rush" logline per IMDB: "In Manhattan, a bike messenger (Gordon-Levitt) picks up an envelope that attracts the interest of a dirty cop (Shannon), who pursues the cyclist throughout the city." I would say this falls squarely into the studios' comfort zone per the metric of "similar but different," a measure that seems to be stretching the boundaries of "similar" more and more each year. Sony is distributing "Premium Rush" and it currently says on BOM that it's slated to hit theaters on January 10, slotted against 4 other wide releases including "Man On A Ledge," which is a thriller and will presumably eat into the B.O. numbers "Rush" generates. So is this a case where Sony is more or less dumping the movie (remember January 2011 was one of the worst B.O. months in recent history, so very much a less than ideal time to release a movie). Regardless you have to think Warner Bros. must feel like "Envoy" will be a better movie and perhaps even that "Rush" will cut trail for "Envoy" in a marketing sense by working the basic story conceit into consumers' consciousness. But that's all just total conjecture. Maybe someone in the know will chime in with more informed speculation.
