Two good ones, The Iron Ladies, here, based on a true story about a volleyball team, and Shaolin Soccer, here, not at all based on a true story. For American movies, so many good baseball ones, including The Sandlot and Bull Durham.

The more interesting aspect of "Rudy" from a screenwriting perspective is the handling of Coach Dan Devine. In the movie he's portrayed as the Lex Luthor of college football coaches. It was done with his own permission after the filmmakers convinced him the movie would be more dramatic that way (though after he saw the movie he was furious with how evil he was made to seem). In real life, it was actually Devine himself who decided to let Rudy play... days before the big game. That "inspiring" scene with the jerseys (which Devine called an "unforgivable lie") never happened. I've often wondered whether the choice of giving Rudy a conventional villain to play off wasn't something of a tacit admission that the real obstacles he faced weren't quite so dramatic.
