I like this film. John Patrick Shanley writes great dialogue. Sometimes I think it's a bit "stagey", like Ronny's dramatic speech and statements about burning in hell, but maybe I'm wrong. It almost sounds like dialogue from another era - forties or fifties, perhaps. I like the change from "Let me go home." to "I wanna go home. I'm gonna go home!" It has more urgency and it makes Loretta more assertive as she's not 'asking' to go home. Same thing with "I want to you to come upstairs with me and GET in my bed!" The whole scene is amped up and that creates more drama and passion, which is exactly the right tone. There are very few directions in the script. All the emotional reactions are coming from the actors, but reading the dialogue itself, it becomes obvious that that's how it must be performed. So lesson learned, write dialogue that is so strong that it cannot be misinterpreted and there's no need (or very little need) to write actor directions.
