Put off forever seeing this film, the brutality, not enough puppies and rainbows, finally persuaded by scale of cultural impact, stunningly huge, wanting to see the origin, and wow, what an amazing piece of work. Bravo De Palma and Pacino, gripping film, and characters.

And Stone - the writer!

@JackBenjamin, you are entirely right, huge oversight forgetting the writer, amazing work from Oliver Stone. I'm watching a lot of Dr Who right now, blown away by the high quality writing, transcends the lesser quality sets, and such a great reminder that good writing is the seed all good story entertainment springs from.

No puppies or rainbows - just one tiger and a "The World Is Yours" blimp!

@Atlanta: That puppies and rainbow line made me laugh out loud. Quite unusual. That's something I'd like to see: Oliver Stone writing a PG puppies and rainbow movie.

Oliver Stone doing puppies and rainbows! So funny, and fun challenge, what would it take? How about a hero chasing rainbows who intersects with a puppy, now three-legged, a pug, calls him Tripod, or Pugface, heh. Hero, held for years in Japanese American internment camp, he's pushed away all memories. Three years ago he started painting rainbows, a week ago he left his solitary life to find the rainbow he's being dreaming about (a living rainbow, with animistic spirit residing at the end, like in the wonderful anime series, Mushishi). The swath of America he intersects with? Whatever slice of life would most entertain Mr. Stone. At the end, he finds his long lost, memory-repressed, sister, for one night in the town where the rainbow intersects. In my story, he's a retired sound technician, she's a world famous harp player (hardest instrument in world to learn I've learned from musician friends), on a world tour started three years ago, doesn't trust recordings... until she meets her brother, who's been holed up loner-style doing high end audio work his whole life. She can retire from traveling, settle with her brother and record for the world, and they open a pug rescue organization :-). Overall message, chase with hope not desperation, or don't push your memories away, you'll push the good with the bad, or it takes all kinds of people to make this country a rich stew. He wanted rainbow, he needed family and friends, she wanted audio talent she could trust, she needed her brother. Pugface, heh. Starring George Takei.

@Atlanta: I was kinda thinking more in his presumed wheelhouse. "Platoon 2": Squad has a top secret mission to wipe out village of suspected communist sympathizers. Operation Puppies and Rainbows: puppies for K-9 tunnel sniffers, rainbows for hellacious air strikes. But then, your story would represent a greater creative challenge for Stone, so let's go with yours!

Platoon 2! 25th anniversary edition, still dealing with "the horrors of war and duality of man," but now with puppies and rainbows! I would see that.
