Fantastic interview. I might pin this up on my wall as a reminder: The screenwriter is really the ship’s navigator. The captain points at a map and tells you, “Plot a course for here!” And you might say, “But sir, there are shoals and rocks and pirates there! We shouldn’t head that way!” And maybe he listens to you. Maybe he doesn’t. But if he doesn’t, your job is not to complain. Your job is to use all the skill you have to make sure the boat gets to where the captain wants it WITHOUT hitting the rocks or the shoals or getting sunk by pirates. If you can do that, you’re well on your way. Sometimes you even find out that the captain knew where he was going after all.

That was a pleasure to read, thank you, Justin and Scott. So concept that never bores, than flesh out character, evolving plot around character. Primacy of character, and character's wants. Good stuff. And metaphor of ship to describe the subsequent professional process, fantastic. How about a part 4:-)?

Justin has several irons in the fire. I'm sure when one of his projects get produced and is about to hit theaters, I could convince him to do another Q&A. He's definitely one of the good guys in Hollywood. And talented to boot!
