Scott, are you working on any specs these days? When you write something for yourself, what genre do you write?

ps. that paw looks fake.
Scott at 2011-08-18 08:15:53:
I do have a spec I want to write, but my life has taken a turn these last few years, and I need to focus on the type of thing I do here, at Screenwriting Master Class, and UNC. I'm working on a book proposal for my 'big' screenwriting project (a comprehensive take on the approach I convey here and use in class, with consults, etc), and I have several eBooks I'm pulling together based on GITS writing, an attempt to satisfy the many demands I've received from readers who want to have an accessible way to go through the content I've created here.

The spec is a big fantasy action-adventure, so a departure for me. But as I noted in the OP, that's one of the advantages of writing on spec: if what you create on the page works, it doesn't matter if you're a chipmunk or a newt, Hollywood will be interested.

The paw that pauses and refreshes.

I guess i'll slot myself in Historical Drama...always a civil war with Hollywood.

Fantasy action-adventure. Not what I expected! It's always interesting to find out what other writers are working on. Maybe we should do a GITS community poll.

People are always surprised when I say I write comedies. I guess I'm not that funny in real life. But on the page.... BAM!
Gabe at 2011-08-18 10:45:36:
Pigeonhole me, please!

From the outside this seems like a good problem to have.

I can see how for a working writer it might be frustrating, though.
Scott at 2011-08-18 10:56:06:
@Gabe: As I noted in the title of the OP: You will be pigeonholed (and why this can be a good thing). If you are willing to say yes, you can make a lot of money being pigeonholed and mining a particular genre.
David at 2011-08-18 12:24:41:
@Teddy - I'm in the opposite boat. I'm pretty funny in social situations but when it comes to the page, it's straight up action-adventure/thrillers.

Which I love, so I guess no surprises there...

Great post.

I could give a shit if I get pigeonholed. At least I'll be writing.

Sounds frustrating as a working writer... and pretty sweet for those of us who want to be one.

Cool post.

Sounds depressing. I should stop writing on my current project at once. I don't want to write that genre forever.
