A 'first-timer,' sometimes called by the trades as a 'tyro scribe,' is a writer who either lands their first professional writing gig in Hollywood or sells a spec script as their official entry into the business.

In sports in the U.S., they would call them a "rookie."

Or the term "newbie" is similar.

The irony is, of course, that a first-timer or tyro scribe may have written a bunch of scripts and spent many years honing their craft before they sell something in Hollywood, essentially a redefinition of the phrase "overnight success."
