Wow, between this list and Spielberg's, I've got a lot of movies to see...
Awesome to see District 9 on that list, but what is Mel Gibson's Apocalypto doing there?

Apocalypto is a very good, underrated film. And I say that as someone who is not a fan of Gibson otherwise.

Also -- great list. I like it more than the "Spielberg" one.

This list certainly seems less randomly chosen and more thought out. A good balance of films over a range of styles and perspectives, though I'd still like to see more women included in these things.

I've seen all but 16, but only one I haven't heard of and most of the rest are in my (admittedly loooong) Netflix queue

Seriously, Apocalypto is an excellent old-fashioned adventure movie. Leave your Gibson baggage at the door and enjoy.

I must second Adam - I think Apocalypto is an excellent movie.

I wonder if it would have performed better if Gibson had made it before he started upsetting people.

apocalypto looked and felt cheap; it completely squandered its setting and premise for the lowest common denominator stuff. I thought subtitles meant he'd be going for an authentic, atmospheric adventure, but instead he turned it into a damn cartoon, drawing only from the barest impressions we had of the Mayans from 6th grade social studies class.

Spike's favorite show, The Wire, should definitely be on the list too!

It shocks me how many people cannot disassociate the man from the work. People won't see Gibson's Apocalypto but have no problem with Polanski's Chinatown are utter hypocrites. Althought, I'll admit Chinatown is waaaaaaaaay better than Apocalypto.
