These are just hilarious advice (not rules).
Thousands of rules for writing can be found online. Truth be told, they are more likely to hinder your writing than help it. Besides, an artist of a writer would not confine themselves to all those limiting rules.
I believe that creative writers would sniff the concept then unleash themselves and go on a hunt for all those tidbits that smell anything like that original concept, or they might come upon a new, more interesting idea and decide to hunt for the treasure it guides them to. No limitations.
My advice: read as many rules; don't try to follow them though. Just write; then figure out why it works or it doesn't. That's how new styles are born. New rules to be added to the mountain of rules already blocking our vision of the magical forests, enchanted castles, ...that lie beyond them.

Anna, I present these lists for two reasons: (1) I'm fascinated to see how different writers' minds work and 'rules' like these generally provide some evidence on that front. (2) You never know when a single piece of wisdom may change the way you write. Your point is quite true, how a writer may get so bogged down in 'rules,' they somehow get blocked. OTOH, something quite positive may emerge from exposure to various ideas about writing.

In any event, you provide a great bit of wisdom in your comment: "Just write; then figure out why it [a rule] works or doesn't.

And if you follow Screenwriting Tips... You Hack

Today's tip just happens to be --

"Rules are made to be broken. If it works — serves the character, advances the story, excites the reader — it’s right."

"pain is distracting" - this allows me to be a little less hard on myself for writing very little lately, since I'm managing chronic pain. It *does* make it hard to let go and get into a groove, not to mention mechanical difficulties with sitting at a computer or holding a pen for an extended period.

@Laura: We all know how hard it is to write - period! But to have to do so while struggling with chronic pain, I can only imagine. At the very least, please do be less hard on yourself. If you can, celebrate every day's worth of writing, even if only a sentence, as a victory. You are moving your story forward, you are further ahead today than you were yesterday. Even at 1 page per day, you can write 2 full length screenplays in a year.

Allow me to send you a special blast of creative juju! Write your stories well!
